The Wisconsin State Patrol employs about 400 sworn officers who are assigned to serve communities across the state.

The Wisconsin State Patrol Academy provides training for State Patrol staff, as well as other law enforcement officers in Wisconsin. The academy is based at the Fort McCoy military installation on WIS 21 near Tomah.

New recruits train at the academy for 26 weeks before they graduate and are assigned to local counties.

The Wisconsin State Patrol holds an annual hiring period to recruit new officers. Learn more about current available positions and how to apply on the State Patrol website.

Non-sworn staff

Staff sitting at a tableThe Division of State Patrol also employs more than 100 non-sworn staff members who serve in a variety of roles to support public safety in Wisconsin

The Bureau of Transportation Safety and Technical Services provides safety program and policy analysis, leads WisDOT’s public outreach on safety issues, and offers technology services to Wisconsin law enforcement agencies.

The Bureau of Network Engineering and Data Infrastructure provides the engineering, installation and technical maintenance for the statewide telecommunications network, and installs equipment for State Patrol officers.
