Governor Walker approves WIS 29/156 improvements in Brown and Shawano counties

Project starts July 10 and spans two construction seasons

(Brown/Shawano County) As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker recently approved $5.2 million to improve 6.3 miles of WIS 29 and WIS 156 in Brown and Shawano counties. The project begins July 10 and is scheduled to finish in September of 2018.

James Peterson Sons, Inc., of Medford, Wis. is the Prime Contractor.

Construction locations include WIS 156 (Shawano County) from WIS 55 to WIS 29, Old 29 Drive from WIS 156 to County Y (Brown County), and WIS 29 at WIS 156 (town of Pittsfield).

WisDOT is improving the WIS 29/156 intersection and 4 miles of WIS 156 to address safety and pavement needs. Upon completion of the project, WIS 156 will travel along a new route via Old 29 Drive, County Y, and the WIS 29/32 interchange.

WIS 29/156 project improvements

  • Realignment of St. Augustine Road and construction of a new overpass at WIS 29/St. Augustine Road
    • The project will eliminate the existing WIS 156/St. Augustine Road intersection with WIS 29.
  • Relocation of WIS 156 onto Old 29 Drive and County Y to the WIS 29/32 interchange
    • Portions of Old 29 Drive/County Y intersection will be reconstructed to accommodate the new WIS 156 route.
  • Resurfacing 4 miles of WIS 156 and 2 miles of new WIS 156 (on Old 29 Drive)
  • Construction of three new box culverts
  • New culvert pipes, guard rail, signing and pavement marking

2017 traffic impacts

  • WIS 29 temporary, single-lane and shoulder closures (highway will remain open).
  • The existing WIS 29/156 intersection will close to all traffic.
    • St. Augustine Road south of Cottonwood Drive will be CLOSED for the duration of the project. There will be no access to/from St. Augustine Road and WIS 29.
  • Local traffic can use Cottonwood Drive to WIS 32 to access WIS 29 in either direction.
  • Old 29 Drive between WIS 156 and County Y will be CLOSED to thru traffic.
    • Access will be maintained to property owners, businesses and emergency responders.
    • WIS 156 will be rerouted in the fall.
  • County Y and Old 29 Drive intersection will remain OPEN during construction.
    • Motorists may encounter flagging operations and single-lane closures.

2018 traffic impacts

  • WIS 29 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction, and short-term, overnight closures will occur for a limited number of nights.
  • St. Augustine Road south of Cottonwood Drive will be CLOSED for the duration of the project. There will be no access to/from WIS 29 and St. Augustine Road.
    • Local traffic can use Cottonwood Drive to WIS 32 to access WIS 29 in either direction.
  • The new WIS 156 from WIS 55 to County Y will close to thru traffic.
    • Detour: WIS 156 will be detoured to WIS 55 to WIS 29.
    • Access will be maintained to property owners, businesses and emergency responders.

Project benefits
Project benefits include improved safety at the WIS 29/WIS 156/St. Augustine Road intersection, and a better driving surface for motorists. Upgrades to guardrail, pavement markings and signage will also provide a safer roadway for motorists.
