Traffic advisory for EAA AirVenture event traffic in Oshkosh

​Motorists may encounter heavy vehicle volumes and some road work

(Oshkosh) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region reminds drivers to expect heavy event traffic for EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh. I-41 traffic in and around the event should be aware of the potential for traffic slowing down and/or stopping due to heavy traffic.
Traffic impacts for the event are expected to occur Sunday, July 23 through Sunday, July 30. Please note the WIS 441 Tri-County Expansion Project in Winnebago and Outagamie counties has lane, ramp and highway closures on I-41, US 10 and WIS 441 to the north of Oshkosh. The most significant project closures occur in the evening and could affect AirVenture motorists returning from events.

Tips for traveling to EAA AirVenture:

  • No distractions while driving. Rear-end crashes are the most common type of crash in heavy traffic. Please keep your eyes on the road and be prepared for back-ups/stopped traffic.
  • Pay close attention to message boards along the I-41 corridor.
  • Event traffic will be using the right-most lanes to exit I-41 in Oshkosh.  Through traffic should consider utilizing the middle and left lanes.
  • Largest traffic concern will be Friday evening with commuter, recreational, and event traffic utilizing the highways.

Days/events that could impact travel:

  • Monday, July 24 – Bare Naked Ladies concert in the evening, Twilight Flight Fest
  • Tuesday, July 25 – Twilight Flight Fest
  • Wednesday, July 26 – Night Air Show (8-10 p.m.), evening fireworks
  • Thursday, July 27 – Twilight Flight Fest
  • Friday, July 28 – Blue Angels air show, Twilight Flight Fest
    • Commuter, recreational and AirVenture traffic all utilizing the freeway
  • Saturday, July 29 – Parade of Bombers air show, Blue Angels air show, Night Air Show (8-10), evening fireworks
  • Sunday, July 30 – Blue Angels

Construction areas outside of the city of Oshkosh that may impact event travel:

Winnebago and Outagamie Counties: I-4, WIS 441, US 10 and system interchange

  • Daytime single lane closures and nighttime dual lane closures, orange barrels, barrier wall, narrow lanes and soft shoulders could impact travel throughout the WIS 441 Tri-County Expansion Project area.
  • Northbound I-41 between US 10 and County BB in Winnebago County will be CLOSED on the following nights to set girders:
    • Tuesday, 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
    • Wednesday, 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
    • Thursday, 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
    • Friday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
    • Detour: Traffic should take exit ramp to eastbound US 10/northbound WIS 441 and continue on WIS 441 to I-41
  • Southbound I-41 between the US 10 ramps in Winnebago County will be CLOSED on the following nights to set girders:
    • Tuesday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Wednesday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Friday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
    • Detour: Traffic should take exit ramp to eastbound US 10/northbound WIS 441 and continue on WIS 441 to I-41
  • Eastbound US 10 between County P/Racine Road and WIS 47/Appleton Road will be closed on Monday from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. for a traffic switch.

Fond du Lac County: WIS 44

  • WIS 44 from the city of Ripon to the Winnebago/Fond du Lac county line is CLOSED.
    • Northbound WIS 44 detour route will follow WIS 23 to County M to WIS 44, and reverse for southbound traffic detour.
