Box culvert construction and fish habitat restoration project finishes this week
Release date: Nov. 14, 2017
(Fond du Lac County) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region office announces WIS 67 in Fond du Lac County will reopen to traffic Thursday afternoon, Nov. 16. The highway has been closed and detoured for construction from Boy Scout Drive to Lakeview Road in the town of Osceola. Work included a new Long Lake box culvert and fish habitat restoration. The $372,981 project began Sept. 11, 2017. Funding was provided by a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) grant from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
Work included replacement of two undersized corrugated metal pipes with one larger box culvert. The previous culvert prevented the passage of fish from Long Lake to historic spawning grounds upstream of the culvert. Project improvements included:
- Provide a cleared, stepped channel from the lake to the culvert, porous rock weirs and other fish passage structures to provide a continuous channel.
- Provide limited habitat restoration upstream of the road-stream crossing in a wetland for fish spawning.
- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will install fish-monitoring receivers in the stream, both upstream and downstream, of the culvert.
The work under this project will improve the stream’s natural characteristics and flow dynamics of the tributary to Long Lake, enhance fish and wildlife movement, and restore fish spawning habitat.
