Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) Innovation Initiative

The DTSD Innovation Initiative is focused on identifying opportunities to identify, evaluate and adopt promising materials, technologies, policies and procedures throughout the Division of Transportation System Development.

The initiative began by streamlining the process for gathering and vetting innovative ideas and has been able to identify champions to oversee the piloting, testing and adoption of promising materials and technologies.  The process also identifies innovative approaches to complex issues, the implementation of best practices and Lean Government Initiative principles.

The Innovation Initiative is a combination of innovation & research and seeks out opportunities to leverage information and technologies through many channels including Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Every Day Counts (EDC) Initiative, the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2), Wisconsin Highway Research Program (WHRP), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), Transportation Engineering and Road Research Alliance (TERRA), Pooled Fund Studies and expanded division-wide efforts to innovate.

The DTSD Innovation Initiative focuses on three major areas of development:

1. Rapid Innovation: Focus on quickly identifying and implementing innovative practices or tools to enhance the delivery of transportation systems.

2. Aggressive Information Technology (IT): Focus on leveraging IT systems, tools and devices to change the way we collaborate and share data along with streamlining data entry, data compiling and data use.

3. Creating a culture of innovation: Changing the way we view innovation and creating a broader acceptance to change through an environment that believes in innovation.
