Hours of operation for oversize/overwidth permitted vehicles

Two newly revised Wisconsin Administrative Rules (TRANS 254 and 255) effective August 1, 2014, expand the times of day oversize vehicles can operate on state highways during weekends (Friday - Sunday). The rules also relax vehicle size limitations to better reflect traffic congestion data and physical improvements to the Milwaukee County Expressway System.

Vehicles that are overweight only, unless specified otherwise in the permit, may operate 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.

Smaller size vehicles with permits -- if size does not exceed 12’ 00” wide, 13’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long:

Larger size vehicles with permits -- if size is greater than 12’ 00” wide, 13’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long, the vehicle may not be operated:

If traveling on the Milwaukee County Expressway greater than legal width, height or length,* the vehicle may not be operated (except on US 45 between West Florist Avenue and West Hampton Avenue and on I-94 between Waukesha line and 108th Street):

  • Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday
  • Between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday
  • Between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday

*Maximum allowed dimensions on the Milwaukee County Expressway are 14’ 0” wide, 14’ 06” high or 150’ 00” long.

Notice: Zoo Interchange construction in Milwaukee County may likely limit movements of OSOW traffic. Carriers are strongly encouraged to verify their route through 511 Wisconsin travel info or WisDOT's oversize/overweight automated issuance system prior to departing with an OSOW load.
