Bond and insurance requirements

​Driver school bond

A driver school shall file with the department a bond or bond alternative in the amount established by the department. Complete Driver School Bond form MV3764.

​The purpose of the bond is to permit the customer to apply to the bond company if obligations of the training contract cannot be met. The school shall file a bond or acceptable alternative based on size and performance. The size of the school and points assessed during the last previous license period shall be used to calculate the bond amount. Refer to the Driver School and Instructor Point System Chart​ for additional information.

The initial bond is based on 0 demerit points and the number of students:

  • 0 - 300 students = $5,000 coverage

  • 301 - 1100 students = $10,000 coverage

  • 1101 + students = $15,000 coverage​

Business insurance ($500,000 minimum coverage)​

A driver school shall maintain a standard liability insurance policy in the name of the school, with the minimum insurance coverage specified by department rule (not less than $500,000). Certification of business liability insurance must be filed with the department. The insurance policy shall require the insurer to notify the department not less than 30 days before the policy expires or is materially changed or canceled.

The insurance policy must be in the name of the school or state "Doing Business As (DBA)" and the name of the school.

Vehicle insurance ($500,000/$500,000/$50,000 minimum coverage)

A driver school shall maintain a vehicle insurance policy in the name of the school, with the minimum insurance coverage specified by department rule.

Minimum insurance coverage is not less than $500,000 because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any once accident, and subject to that limit for one person, to a limit of not less than $500,000 because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons in any one accident and, if the accident has resulted in injury to or destruction of property, to a limit of not less than $50,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. Certification of vehicle insurance must be filed with the department. The insurance policy shall require the insurer to notify the department not less than 30 days before the policy expires or is materially changed or cancelled.

The insurance policy must be in the name of the school or state "Doing Business As (DBA)" and the name of the school. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of each covered vehicle must be listed on the certificate of insurance.​
