Project location

Milwaukee Street Bridge, located over northbound lanes of I-39, in Dane County

Project overview

The proposed project is to replace the deck for the Milwaukee Street Bridge over northbound I-39. This proposed state highway rehabilitation maintenance (SHRM) project will replace the deck for the existing four span concrete girder bridge. The bridge deck has reached the end of its useful life. The deck will be widened from the existing 26-ft clear roadway width to a 30-ft clear roadway width (matching the width of Milwaukee Street Bridge over southbound I-39). The existing structure profile grade line will be raised 3-5 inches to accommodate a thicker deck and appropriate haunches. The bearings will be replaced, and some concrete surface repair of the substructure is required. The bridge will have new 32SS parapets with chain link fence mounted along the top. The abutments, wing walls, and other bridge elements will require minor work to accommodate the widening. Existing guardrail and end terminals will be replaced. Standard bridge signage added.

Traffic impacts/detours

I-39 northbound

During construction, I-39 will remain open to traffic. Traffic will be staged on northbound segment of I-39 to allow work on the overcrossing Milwaukee Street bridge. Single and double-lane closures are planned along I-39 northbound to accommodate bridge demolition and replacement, and will be used during nighttime and off-peak hours. Nighttime work expected. Milwaukee Street will be closed between Thompson Drive and 4,350 feet (.82 mi) west of Sprecher Road to all traffic for duration of project construction at bridge location. Ramp closures expected only with bridge work affecting ramp location.  The northbound I-39 to eastbound I-94 exit ramp and northbound I-39 to westbound WIS 30 exit ramps may be closed on non-weekend nights (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Closures will be restricted to non-peak an nighttime hours. Closures will accommodate deck demolition and replacement.

Milwaukee Street

The Milwaukee Street bridge will be closed to through traffic. Traffic will utilize a signed local detour route during all construction stages utilizing Thompson Drive to County Highway T (Commercial Avenue), to Sprecher Road. The proposed detour route is approximately four miles in length and has a travel time of approximately 16 minutes (not including traffic control delay). No signal timing adjustments required.

Detour traffic on Milwaukee Street heading east:

  • Turn left on N. Thompson Drive
  • Navigate through roundabout and veer right onto County T/Commercial Avenue
  • Turn right on Sprecher Road

Detour traffic on Milwaukee Street heading west:

  • Turn right on Sprecher Road
  • Turn left on County T/Commercial Avenue
  • Navigate through roundabout and veer left onto N. Thompson Drive

I-39 northbound exit ramp to eastbound I-94

If necessary, ramps will be closed only at night when bridge work affects the ramp location. A ramp detour route will be posted, utilizing the changeable message sign. The ramp detour route will be posted for I-39 northbound traffic and will utilize exits at High Crossing Boulevard to re-enter I-39.
