Governor Doyle approves $6.8 million in elderly/disabled transportation awards
November 13, 2008
Governor Jim Doyle has approved 56 awards totaling $6,769,633 in state and federal funds that will help purchase specialized transit service vehicles to assist elderly and disabled individuals throughout the state over the next two years.
The funds are being distributed through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Elderly and Disabled Transportation Capital Assistance program. The grants assist nonprofit organizations and local governments by covering up to 80 percent of the costs of specialized vans and buses used to meet the daily transportation needs of elderly and disabled state residents. Grant recipients provide the 20 percent local match. The 2008 and 2009 grants include approximately $4.3 million in federal dollars and about $2.4 million in state funds.
"This federal, state and local partnership provides essential transportation services that greatly enhance the quality of life for our elderly and disabled citizens," Governor Doyle said. "And it represents another example of our ongoing efforts to support public safety and economic growth through strategic investments in our comprehensive transportation system."
The federal and state program, initiated in the mid-1970s, has helped fund the purchase of about
1800 vehicles in Wisconsin, including the 650 active vehicles in the state currently providing
transportation services to elderly and disabled persons. Many of the grant recipients serve smaller
communities in rural areas. Delivery of vehicles funded through this recent grant cycle will take
place in 2009 and 2010.
