Weight limit restrictions on WIS 27 Ounce River bridge in Bayfield County

Ounce River Bridge is posted at 40-ton weight limit until further notice.

Release Date: February 25, 2019

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has posted a 40-ton weight restriction on the WIS 27 structure over Ounce River, east of Gordon in Bayfield County.

All bridges in the state are inspected on a regular cycle by certified bridge inspectors. A recent inspection of this bridge showed notable deterioration in some structural elements. After analyzing the bridge to account for this deterioration, the 40-ton posting was put in place to maintain an acceptable factor of safety for the bridge. This load posting limits any vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of more than 40 tons from traveling over the bridge, regardless of vehicle type/configuration. Understanding that load postings are an impediment to moving freight, WisDOT is evaluating all options to repair the structure and remove the load posting.
