Governor Evers approves WIS 22 improvements in Oconto County

​Roadway resurfacing and full closure begins Tuesday, June 15, 2021​

(Oconto) To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Governor Evers signed a $2.39 million contract to improve 6.71 miles of WIS 22 from US 141 to US 41 through the towns of Stiles and Oconto in Oconto County. The project begins Tuesday, June 15, and concludes in mid-August. WIS 22 will be closed and detoured to through traffic at the start of the project.  

Northeast Asphalt, Inc. of Greenville, Wis., is the prime contractor.

Project improvements
Construction includes resurfacing of WIS 22 in the work zone. The project will also update drainage structures, widen paved shoulders, update beam guard, and install centerline/shoulder rumble strips.  

Traffic impacts
A WIS 22 full closure, flagging operations, lanes closures and/or temporary traffic signals will take place during work.
  • WIS 22 will be CLOSED and detoured beginning Monday, June 15, 2021 for 30-working days between US 141 and US 41 for drainage structure work. 
    • Access will be maintained to businesses and property owners in the work zone.
    • Temporary business signing information for businesses in the work zone available on WisDOT's In This Together website for businesses.
  • Detour: WIS 22 to US 141 to US 41 to WIS 22.
  • The southbound US 41 to WIS 22 ramp will be closed for three calendar days for work in US 41/WIS 22 roundabouts (dates TBA).

Project benefits
The project will improve the pavement surface which will reduce surface roughness and provide smoother driving surface for motorists. The improvements will also extend to life of the existing pavement. Wider shoulders, new rumble strips, and updated beam guard will enhance safety for the traveling public.

Work Zone Safety
Each year in Wisconsin, both highway workers and motorists are killed and injured in crashes that happen in highway construction zones. Motorists should slow down, be patient and pay attention to their surroundings in this and all work zones.
