Governor Evers approves I-39 resurfacing project in Portage County

Work includes cleaning culvert pipes, repairing pipe separation and replacing guardrail

Release date: June 27, 2022

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Governor Evers has signed a $2.54 million contract with prime contractor American Asphalt of Wisconsin of Mosinee for a resurfacing project on I-39 in Portage County between County X and the Marathon County line. Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 5.

The pavement is showing signs of deterioration. To address this, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Remove a portion of the existing pavement and place new asphalt pavement on I-39 and the on- and off-ramps at the County DB interchange.
  • Clean culvert pipes and repair pipe separation.
  • Replace guardrail.

I-39 will remain open during construction, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures. Construction is scheduled for completion in mid-August. The construction schedule is based on favorable weather conditions and construction status.
