December 6 deadline for $75 million local government transportation grants

There is still time to apply for the new one-time Multimodal Local Supplement (MLS) funding program. The $75 million program will pay up to 90 percent of total eligible costs for a range of transportation projects. Grants are available for projects including:

  • Roads
  • Bridges
  • Transit capital and facility grants
  • Bicycle and pedestrian accommodations
  • Railroads 
  • Harbors

Almost 800 individuals participated in Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) webinars that provided program details. In a recently released WisDOT podcast, leaders of local government associations explained the high level of interest in the MLS program.

“There’s a lot of interest, because there’s a lot of need,” Dan Fedderly, executive director of the Wisconsin County Highway Association said.

“The percentage that the local government is responsible for is relatively small compared to many of our other programs,” Mike Koles, executive director of the Wisconsin Towns Association, added.

Local governments, or groups of local governments are eligible, including tribal governments. The application is just two and half pages and has been described as “accountable, but simple.”

“The program is designed to be able to address a range of possible projects, and puts the decision-making in the hands of the locals,” WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. 

 “This may be one of the best things that happened to transportation at the state level in a long time,” Jerry Deschane, executive director of the League of Municipalities, said.

A WisDOT webpage provides a full range of resources to assist local governments completing the application. Application submittal deadline is Friday, December 6, at 5 p.m.
