US 51, from Marathon County line to Lincoln County K, southbound and northbound lanes.
The project includes removing the existing asphalt surface, conducting repairs to the underlying base, then overlaying with asphalt pavement. This work will be conducted on both lanes of the Southbound and Northbound sides of US 51. No changes to the road grades will occur. Ramps at County Q, WIS 64, and County K, as well as work on the overpass roadways between ramp ends at County Q and County K will undergo asphalt surface removal, then asphalt paving.
Construction will be phased to minimize impacts to the traveling public, however some impacts are anticipated; except when seasonal shut-down of construction takes place from mid November to April. Construction will begin about September 20, 2021, and will end before the Memorial holiday in 2023.
In general, motorists can expect either closure of both lanes on one side for construction while traffic is bi-directional on the opposite side; or single lane closures on each side with traffic in the adjoining lanes. During the later, all lanes for southbound traffic will be open on Sunday from 6 a.m. through 6 a.m. Monday, and all lanes for northbound traffic will be open on Friday at 12 p.m. through 6 a.m. Saturday.
The only detour anticipated will be a short-term detour for WIS 64 ramp traffic while construction occurs on each ramp. The detour will utilize adjacent interchanges to complete a large "U-turn" maneuver. This work will occur from 8 p.m. thru 6 p.m. the following day, commencing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Work on County Q and County K ramps will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, commencing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. No detour will be signed.
