US 51/US 2 Intersection, Iron County

US 51 and US 2 Intersection, Iron County

The project includes removing the existing US 51 Overhead Structure and replacing the interchange with a single lane roundabout with bypass lanes.

Traffic Impacts

Construction of the proposed roundabout is planned to be completed in four stages:

Stage 1: A temporary US 51 roadway would be constructed to the west of the existing US 51 alignment, resulting in a temporary T-intersection to the west of the existing overpass of US 2.

Stage 2: Work zones would be located east and west of the interchange along US 2 for the construction of temporary crossovers.  Work zones would also be located along the WB lanes and north side of US 2 for the removal of the north half of the existing structure, the NB US 51 to WB US 2 ramp, and the WB US 2 to SB US 51 ramp.  The future WB US 2 bypass lane would be constructed.

Stage 3: Construction would be located along the EB lanes and south side of US 2 to remove the south half of the existing structure, the NB US 51 to WB US 2 ramp, and the NB US 51 to EB US 2 ramp.  Roundabout construction would be completed.

Stage 4: Construction would include the remaining segments of US 51 and the removal of the temporary US 51 roadway.
