  • Rice Lake to West Knapp Street, West Avenue Intersection

The projects around the US 53/WIS 48 focus on three primary objectives:

  • Improving roadway safety
  • Improving operational deficiencies that are unsafe, impact traffic flow or cause driver confusion
  • Improve facilities for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles

The projects involve a complete reconstruction of WIS 48 and its intersections with West Avenue. Both the northbound and southbound US 53 ramp terminals will be reconstructed as roundabouts. The highway will be reduced from two lanes to one lane. The Bear Paw Avenue intersection will undergo no major reconstruction but will receive improvements in the form of pavement marking and traffic signal installation.

The construction of both projects is scheduled for mid-April through November 2020.

Traffic Impacts

Bi-directional traffic will be maintained while work is performed. Additional staging and temporary widening will need to occur on the west end of the project to accommodate bi-directional traffic. The reconstruction anticipated at West Avenue will require short-term roadway closure at the intersection of WIS 48.

Traffic impacts at the intersection of WIS 48 with Bear Paw Avenue are anticipated to be less significant. Lane shifts will be required at most road approaches to accommodate overall staging. Closures at Bear Paw Avenue are not anticipated.

Temporary traffic signals will be utilized at the four intersections within the project limits to accommodate traffic movements from the side roads and ramps. Temporary ramp closures are required to facilitate ramp terminal construction. There will be access restrictions due to traffic staging. Detouring WIS 48 is not anticipated.
