WIS 145 (Fond du Lac Freeway) Rehabilitation - Milwaukee County

WIS 145 (Fond du Lac Freeway) is experiencing a decrease in ride quality and an increase in pavement distresses. Due to the poor pavement condition, WisDOT is proposing to resurface the roadway from 68th Street to Good Hope Road, as well as improve various structures along the WIS 145 corridor in Milwaukee County.

Selection of Preferred Alternative

WisDOT has selected a preferred alternative for the WIS 145 (Fond du Lac Freeway) project.

The first public involvement meeting was held on December 4, 2019 at James Madison Academic Campus in Milwaukee. Two alternatives were presented at the meeting; a six-lane (in-kind) resurfacing alternative and a four-lane resurfacing alternative making use of the two median lanes in each direction. The four-lane alternative has been recommended as the preferred improvement. This recommendation is supported by the City of Milwaukee local officials and municipal staff.

Proposed Improvements

  • Four-mile pavement resurfacing.
    • The facility will be restriped as a four-lane roadway. The improvement will make use of the existing two-inside travel lanes in each direction.
    • The outside lane will be converted to a wider shoulder and ramp acceleration and deceleration lanes will be lengthened to allow additional space to merge with mainline traffic.
  • Drainage, shoulder, barrier and guard rail repairs and upgrades.
  • Bridge deck replacement and painting of the Grantosa Drive bridges over WIS 145 and bridge abutment repair and spot painting of the WIS 145 bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad and W. Flagg Avenue.
  • Application of a polymer overlay to eight bridges located along WIS 145, WIS 175, and WIS 181.

Tentatively scheduled for 2022 construction.

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic staging during construction
    • Inside/outside daytime lane closures from 68th Street to Good Hope Road.
    • Overnight closures of WIS 145 to allow work on the middle lane of WIS 145 and bridge work at Grantosa Avenue.
