Study Overview
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is studying alternatives to reconstruct the I-794 Lake Interchange corridor in downtown Milwaukee, generally between the Milwaukee River and Hoan Bridge.
Reconstruction Needs
- Aging infrastructure originally built in 1974-1975
- Bridge conditions
- Bicycle and pedestrian safety
- Traffic safety
Key Study Goals
- Engage stakeholders and public throughout the process
- Replace and modernize deteriorating freeway infrastructure
- Accommodate traffic volumes without capacity expansion
- Improve safety, operations, and access to Downtown, Third Ward and Lakefront
- Increase connectivity for all, including bikes and pedestrians
- Improve the compatibility of transportation infrastructure with local plans and development
- Minimize impacts on existing transportation infrastructure
- Minimize construction impacts
- Provide opportunities for workforce development
Project Phase
The project is in the preliminary study phase conceptualizing alternatives.
