Pavement improvement project to start on WIS 27

Chippewa County project also includes making repairs to the Paint Creek Bridge, cleaning, repairing, removing or replacing culverts, adding centerline rumble strips

Release date: May 9, 2024

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $3.85 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a pavement improvement project on WIS 27 from the Eau Claire County line north to just south of WIS 29 in Chippewa County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, May 20.

The pavement on this section of highway is showing some signs of deterioration. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Perform a cold-in-place recycling of the top 3 inches of pavement on much of the project corridor.
    • During cold-in-place recycling, a portion of the existing pavement is milled off, and the milled material is crushed, mixed with a stabilizing agent, paved back on the road and compacted. After it cures, a thin layer of asphalt is placed over the roadway.
  • Resurface approximately 1,000 feet of asphalt pavement just south of WIS 29.
  • Repair the Paint Creek Bridge and substructure; mill the bridge deck and apply a concrete overlay; and add approach pavement on both sides of the structure.
  • Clean, repair, remove or replace culverts as needed.
  • Add centerline rumble strips.
  • Upgrade guardrail.

During construction, WIS 27 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:

  • Single-lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals during work on Paint Creek Bridge.
  • Single-lane closures controlled by flagging during working hours for remaining work.

Construction is scheduled for completion in August.
