WIS 42 construction complete in Sturgeon Bay, Door County

Intersection safety improvement and resurfacing project finishes under budget

Release Date: October 12, 2022

(Sturgeon Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region announces completion of all major construction on 7.2 miles of WIS 42 between the south junction of WIS 57 and the Bayview Bridge in the town of Nasewaupee and city of Sturgeon Bay, Door County. Construction of the $7.49 million began Wednesday, March 23, 2022, and finishes slightly under budget. Minor finishing work may still occur.

WIS 42 state highway construction included diamond-grinding, resurfacing and/or concrete pavement repairs at various locations in the project work zone, pipe and drainage work, replacement of beamguard, and signing/pavement markings where necessary.

WisDOT constructed intersection safety improvements at Ashland Avenue, Neenah Avenue, and County U as part of locally funded construction. Local dollars were also used to reconfiguration southbound WIS 42/57 traffic lanes and reconstruction of a multi-use path.

Project Benefits

Resurfacing and pavement repairs provide a smoother driving surface, extend the life of the pavement structure and reduce future maintenance costs. Intersection improvements, including additional turn lanes and reconfigurations of traffic lanes, enhance safety for motorists during turning/crossing movements. Guardrail improvements and shoulder rumble strips help mitigate possible serious crashes and alert drivers who inadvertently leave the lane of travel.

For detailed project improvements, including exhibits showing the new intersection modifications and turning movements, please see the WIS 42 Project construction website. Northeast Asphalt, Inc. from Greenville, Wis. was the Prime Contractor.
