Equipment, machinery, materials, self-propelled vehicle (AA)

  • Maximum allowances are 150’ 00” long, 14’ 00” wide, 16’ 00” high, 170,000 pounds
  • Examples of loads include transformer, boat, air conditioner, and crane under-own-power

Sealed container (CM)

  • This permit is for the transportation of a sealed load
  • “Sealed load” means a load of commodities or products, being transported in a vehicle or container, which has been sealed with a tamper-evident seal affixed at the time of initial loading
  • The load must be in transport as a stage in international trade
  • Issued for weights 80,001 to 90,000 lbs.
  • Vehicle or vehicle combination must have a minimum of six axles
  • Weights must comply with weights in 348.15 (3) (c) and 348.29
  • Permit valid on all interstate highways
  • Must be ordered through our online Self Issue System

Farm and field (FF)

  • This permit is for the transportation of certain agricultural products
  • "Agricultural product” means any of the following or any combination of the following: fruit, vegetables, grain, including distillers’ grain, live livestock, and feed or nutritional supplements for livestock and fish or minnows
  • Issued for weights 80,001 to 90,000 lbs.
  • Vehicle or vehicle combination must have a minimum of six axles
  • Weights must comply with weights in 348.15 (3) (c) and 348.29
  • Not valid on interstate highways, except for the portion designated as I-41 between I-94 at the Zoo Interchange and I-43 Green Bay
  • Valid only for the transportation of agricultural products to a farm or from a field or farm to a storage facility on the farmer’s owned or leased land, a facility for initial storage that is not on the farmer’s owned or leased land, or a facility for initial processing

Fluid Milk Products at 98,000 lbs. (FMP)

  • “Fluid milk product” (FMP) is defined as raw milk transported from a farm where the milk was produced to the first location of either a processing plant or transfer station..
  • Permit is only valid for the overweight transport of FMP by a combination vehicle having 6 or more axles. Vehicle combinations transporting FMP may only exceed the maximum gross weight limitation in Wis. Stat. s. 348.15(3)(c) by not more than 18,000 pounds.
  • Maximum permit weight of 98,000 lbs.
  • Permit is not valid for the transport of FMP in excess of the maximum GVW provided in Wis. Stat. s. 348.15(3)(c) during spring thaw.

Mobile home or modular building section (MH)

  • Maximum outside to outside dimension of towed unit below the roof line is 15’ 00” wide
  • Maximum roofline dimension is 16’ 00” wide
  • Left side roof overhang may not exceed right side roof overhang, no maximum right side roof overhang
  • Maximum 100’ 00” long, 15’ 00” high and legal weight
  • Separate permits are required for each section
  • Escorts required on some roadways, as described in the Escort Highways form MV2740

Garbage, refuse, and recyclable scrap (AG)

  • "Garbage" means discarded materials resulting from the handling, processing, storage and consumption of food. The transporting vehicle must be a self-compactor equipped vehicle or a roll-off equipped truck or a roll-off trailer that uses all axles while transporting garbage or refuse.
  • "Refuse" means any combustible and non-combustible rubbish including, but not limited to paper, wood, metal, glass, cloth and products thereof; litter and street rubbish, ashes and lumber, concrete, and other debris resulting from the construction or demolition of structures. The transporting vehicle must be a self-compactor equipped vehicle or a roll-off equipped truck or a roll-off trailer that uses all axles while transporting garbage or refuse.
  • "Recyclable-scrap" means metallic or non-metallic material in waste for which there exists a commercially demonstrated processing or manufacturing technology which uses the material as a raw material, and which is transported for use as such a raw material. Metallic or nonmetallic scrap includes pig iron.
  • "Municipal sewage residue material" is the residue material resulting from treatment of municipal sewage, including any chemical treatment added to the liquid. The transporting vehicle must be a combination vehicle with a minimum of 5 axles, as required by Wis. Stats. s. 348.27(9r)(b).
  • Not valid on the Interstate, except on I 39 (Hwy 51) from Wausau south to the Hwy 78-I 90/94 interchange near Portage and for that portion of USH 41 between I 94 at the Zoo Interchange and I 43 Green Bay, which has been designated as I 41.
  • Permits transporting pig iron are not valid on the Interstate.

Fruits, vegetables/raw forest at 90,000 lbs (RF)

  • This permit allows 112.5% of the weight authorized by Wisconsin Statute 348.15(3)(b) and (c)
  • Maximum permit weight of 90,000 lbs
  • Raw forest products, which means logs, pilings, posts, poles cordwood products, wood chips, sawdust, pulpwood, fuel wood, intermediary lumber and Christmas trees not altered by a manufacturing process off the land, sawmill or factory from which they are taken
  • Fruits or vegetables, which means the edible part of the plants and the inedible part of plants, which are commonly harvested and sold, with the edible parts. Can only be transported from:
    • Field to storage or
    • Field to processing facilities
    • This permit also allows for the limited movement of bulk potatoes from storage facilities to rail loading facilities (See route limitations in information sheet)
    • This permit is not valid on the Interstate except for I-39 from STH 29 south of Wausau to the Portage Interchange and for I-41 from I-94 to I-43
    • Seasonal exemption for overweight vegetables [See s. 348.17(5) Wis. Stats.]

Raw forest products (RS)

  • This permit is authorized by s.348.27(9m)(a)4
  • Maximum permit weight is 98,000 lbs
  • Vehicle combination must have a minimum of six axles; no axle may exceed 18,000 lbs
  • Raw forest products, which means logs, pilings, posts, poles cordwood products, wood chips, sawdust, pulpwood, fuel wood, intermediary lumber and Christmas trees not altered by a manufacturing process off the land, sawmill or factory from which they are taken
  • This permit is not valid on Interstate except for I-41 from I-94 to I-43 and I-39 from WI-34 to WI-29

Hay and straw (HM)

  • This permit is authorized by s.348.27(16)
  • Authorizes overweight transportation of hay or straw
  • Maximum permit height 15’00”
  • If vehicle is overweight, but legal in all other dimensions and weight, travel on all interstate highways is allowed except where already restricted by law
  • May not operate on any Interstate highway if both overheight and overwidth
  • Need written permission for travel on local roads

Potatoes bulk (PB)

  • Transportation of bulk potatoes from storage to food processing facilities only
  • Cannot exceed maximum vehicle or vehicle combination weight limitations under s.348.15(3)(c) by more than 10,000 pounds
  • Maximum vehicle or vehicle combination cannot exceed 90,000 pounds
  • Not allowed to travel during spring thaw
  • Not valid on any interstate highway

Potato seed (PS)

  • Transportation of potato intended for use as seed
  • Cannot exceed maximum vehicle or vehicle combination weight limitations under s.348.15(3)(c) by more than 10,000 pounds
  • Maximum vehicle or vehicle combination cannot exceed 90,000 pounds
  • Allows 53 foot trailers
  • Allowed to travel during spring thaw
  • Specified Route. See Trans 258 for vehicle, weight and routes specifications
  • Requires written local roads route approval

Michigan border (MI)

  • Allows Michigan rigs and configurations, transporting miscellaneous commodities, to operate in Wisconsin within 11 air miles of the Wisconsin-Michigan border
  • Allows the transportation of raw forest products, lumber, or forestry biomass beyond the 11 air miles on specified corridors. List of corridors can be found in the Michigan border information sheet linked below
  • Maximum permit weight 164,000

Building mover (BM)

  • For moving buildings such as houses, garages or other structures as defined below
    • "Building" means a dwelling or other structure (or portion of) with one or more overall transport measurements equaling or exceeding 12 feet wide, 14 feet 3 inches high, or 100 feet long, that is raised and supported from an existing foundation to be moved and placed on a permanent foundation at a new location where the building is to be delivered; "building" does not include a modular housing unit or manufactured building or home
    • The building mover permit has both minimum dimensions, as stated above, and maximum dimensions.
      • Maximum dimensions: 15' high; 15' wide and 100' overall
  • Applicants for "building" mover permits must have motor carrier authority (MC or LC), which requires insurance on file. LC (intrastate) authority may be obtained and insurance may be filed with the Motor Carrier Registration Unit - (608) 266-9900. MC (interstate) authority must be obtained from the federal government.
  • Drivers who will operate the truck or semi-tractor that will tow a "building" must have a valid CDL (Commercial Driver License). The CDL number for all operators must be provided on the permit application.

Grain, coal, and iron ore (AC)

  • Grain means corn, wheat, soybeans, oats, barley, rye, buckwheat, sorghum, flaxseed, milo, sunflower seed and mixed grain as defined in the federal grain standards act. The term does not include canning crops for processing or grain used or intended for use solely for sowing purposes.
  • Valid on all Wisconsin state trunk highways within 5 miles of Minnesota border
  • Allows up to 110 percent of legal gross weights with a maximum weight of 88,000 pounds

Granular Roofing Material (GR)

  • This permit is authorized under 348.27(15)(a) Wis. Stats
  • Maximum permit weight is 90,000 lbs.
  • Permit may be issued only by the department, regardless of the highways to be used.
  • No permit may be issued unless the governing body of each municipality or county having jurisdiction over such streets or highways adopts a resolution approving the transportation of the load over that portion of the designated route that is on streets or highways under the jurisdiction of the municipality or county.
  • This permit is not valid on the Interstate.

Industrial Interplant (II)

  • This permit is authorized under 348.27(4) Wis. Stats.
  • Maximum allowances are 150' 00" long, 14' 00" wide, 16' 00" high and legal weight.
  • The department may issue, to industries and to their agent motor carriers owning and operating oversize vehicles in connection with interplant, and from plant to state line, operations in this state, annual or consecutive month permits for the operation of such vehicles over designated routes, provided that such permit shall not be issued under this section to agent motor carriers or, except for the I 39 corridor and the I 41 corridor, from plant to state line for vehicles or loads of width exceeding 102 inches upon routes of the national system of interstate and defense highways.
  • If the routes desired to be used by the applicant involve city or village streets or county or town highways, the application shall be accompanied by a written statement of route approval by the officer in charge of maintenance of the highway in question.

Inter Plant Distribution in Kenosha/Racine Counties (IPD)

  • This permit is authorized under 348.27(4m) Wis. Stats.
  • For the transportation of loads on STH 31 and on local highways designated in the permit that provide access to STH 31.
  • Valid only for the transportation of loads between or among any of the following:
    1. A manufacturing plant located in Racine County.
    2. A distribution center located in Kenosha County.
    3. A warehouse located in Kenosha County.
    4. A warehouse located in Racine County.
  • If the routes involve highways under the jurisdiction of local authorities, the department shall submit the permit application to the officers in charge of maintenance of the local highways to be used, for their approval.
  • Issued for Overweight only.
  • Valid for any vehicle combination at a maximum gross weight of 98,000 pounds.
  • Combination must have six (6) or more axles. Each axle must carry at least 8% of total GVW to be counted as one of the 6 axles.
  • Not valid on any interstate highway.
  • Not valid on any highway or bridge with a posted weight limitation that is less than the vehicle combination's gross weight.
