The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of developing plans for proposed improvements along US 41 between Frog Pond Road in Oconto County and Wayside Lane in Marinette County. The purpose of this website is to provide information regarding the proposed improvements, describe the potential impacts it would have on the community, and offer an opportunity for public comment.
Project location
The project runs for approximately 20.6 miles along US 41 from Frog Pond Road to Wayside Lane, and through the city of Oconto and towns of Oconto and Little River in Oconto County, and the city of Peshtigo and towns Peshtigo and Grover in Marinette County.
NOTE: Another highway improvement project on US 41 will take place south of this project in 2027. To see project details for the 2027 US 41 construction, please visit the
US 41 improvements in Oconto County in 2027 website.

WisDOT had created a public handout for this project. Please feel free to download and share.
Project purpose and need
The purpose of the project is to improve the deteriorating pavement and culverts in the project work zone. This improvement will also address other roadway deficiencies to extend the service life of US 41.
Proposed improvements
This is a rehabilitation-level project. Proposed improvements include:
- Concrete pavement repairs on US 41 mainline, ramps and crossroads
- Mill and overlay the asphalt shoulders on US 41 and ramps and at grade intersections
- Inlet and curb and gutter repairs
- Culvert repairs
- Upgrade curb ramps at the WIS 22/County Y overpass to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
- Minor repairs on various bridges

Anticipated benefits
Concrete pavement repairs will provide a smoother ride for motorists, extend the life of the pavement, and decrease future maintenance costs. Culvert repairs will help ensure proper drainage. Guardrail upgrades will provide a higher level of safety should impact occur. Bridge repairs will extend the life of the bridges. Curb ramp upgrades will provide improved accessibility for those who rely on those accommodations.
Traffic impacts
US 41 will be open to traffic throughout construction. A short term closure of WIS 22 will be necessary for improvements at the WIS 22/County Y overpass.
- On I-41, motorists can expect traffic to be reduced to one lane in each direction during construction.
- Various on and off ramps on US 41 in the project work zone may be closed briefly during construction.
- WIS 22 will be closed two to three weeks to upgrade the curb ramps at the WIS 22/County Y overpass.
- Access will be maintained for all residents and businesses in the detoured portion of WIS 22.
- Detour Route: WIS 22 through traffic will be detoured using US 141 and US 41.
- NOTE: WisDOT detours typically follow interstates and state highways for long haul trucking and semi trucks. Many times, local residents who do not drive a semi truck can find a shorter route using the local road system.

Business Resource: WisDOT’s In This Together program
WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones or impacted by detour routes have special needs. WisDOT's In This Together program is offered to businesses, organizations, and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. It includes promotional examples, case studies and a specially designed Business Coordination Guide with information on:
- Planning ahead
- Staying informed and keeping customers informed
- Tips for businesses
- Temporary business signing during detours
WisDOT’s In This Together website is located at
www.wisconsindot.gov/Together. Note: Businesses impacted by highway closures and detours will have an opportunity for temporary business signage during construction.
