WIS 64 Pavement Improvement - Oconto County

map of project limitsThe Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of developing plans for proposed improvements on 12.25 miles of WIS 64 in Oconto County. The purpose of this website is to provide information regarding the proposed improvements, describe the potential impacts it would have on the community, and offer an opportunity for public comment.

Project location

This project is located on WIS 64 from the WIS 32 South Junction in Mountain to County Road S in Pound in Oconto County.

Project purpose and need

The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the existing roadway pavement within the project limits and improve other roadside features including beamguard and culverts to enhance safety and functionality.

Currently, the pavement condition shows signs of deterioration in the form of cracking and bumps / dips which are indicative of frost heave damage. The result is that the current pavement has a rough, uneven riding surface. The pavement surface has reached the end of its useful life and should be repaired. In addition, existing beamguard within the project limits does not meet current standards and needs to be replaced. There are also numerous existing culverts that are in need of repairs or cleaning to restore function and improve drainage throughout the corridor.

Proposed improvements

Proposed improvements to the WIS 64 corridor include:

  • Mill 2.5 inches of the existing asphalt surface and pave 3.5 inches of new asphalt.
  • Widen the paved shoulders by 1’, from 4’ to 5’ wide.
  • Install centerline and shoulder rumble strips.
  • Replace the existing beamguard.
  • Replace existing turtle exclusion fence.
  • Clean out / repair existing culverts.
  • Install new pavement markings.

Anticipated benefits

Improvements will provide motorists with a smoother riding surface resulting in less wear and tear on vehicles. Construction will extend the life of pavement, and decrease future maintenance costs. Beamguard replacements will improve safety and the maintenance on the existing culverts will improve drainage along the corridor. In addition, the wider paved shoulder will provide improved bicycle accommodations along the corridor.

Traffic impacts

WIS 64 will remain open to traffic during construction with lane closures and flagging operations.

  • Please remember, handheld devices are illegal when driving through Wisconsin work zones.

Schedule

  • Public Involvement: Summer 2025
  • Environmental document: Fall 2025
  • Final design: May 2028
  • Construction currently scheduled in spring 2030
    • Could be advanced to 2029 if funding becomes available.
