I-94 (Chippewa River and Chippewa River Overflow Bridges), towns of Brunswick and Union - Eau Claire County

Location

Two bridges in the Eau Claire County town of Brunswick carry east- and westbound I-94 over the Chippewa River and two bridges carry east- and westbound I-94 over the Chippewa River overflow to the north in the town of Union.

Overview

Built in 1965, the four bridges are in need of rehabilitation. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing the following on them:

  • Replacing the expansion joints and abutment backwalls
  • Overlaying the bridge decks with concrete
  • Completing spot painting of the existing steel girders
  • Updating guardrail at all bridge approaches

In addition, a high-friction surface treatment will be added to the westbound I-94 bridge over the Chippewa River.

Schedule

Construction currently is scheduled for 2028-29.

Traffic Impacts

During the multiyear construction project, I-94 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will be shifted to one side of the interstate via median crossovers that will carry one lane of traffic in each direction as work is completed on the bridges on the other side.

Public Involvement

WisDOT is seeking public input on the proposed project. Please review the following for additional information:
