US 2 (Bayfield Road to County D), Poplar - Douglas County

Location

The project is on US 2 approximately 800 feet west of County D in the Douglas County village of Poplar.

Overview

A 6-by-6-foot concrete box culvert was placed under US 2 northwest of County D at least 90 years ago. A 5-foot metal culvert under the Tri-County Corridor Trail connects into the concrete box culvert. The entire culvert system is deteriorated and needs replacement. The proposed project:

  • Removes and replaces both structures with a new metal culvert.

Real Estate

Permanent and temporary easements are proposed at the culvert ends to construct and maintain the project. Preliminary right-of-way impacts are shown on the exhibits. WisDOT expects to begin real estate acquisition in January 2023.

Schedule

Construction currently is scheduled to begin in 2025.

  • Construction is anticipated to take one to two months.

Traffic and Trail Impacts

Traffic will be maintained on US 2 during construction with a short-term detour proposed during the culvert work directly under the US 2 travel lanes.

  • US 2 traffic will be detoured on County F and WIS 13 for approximately two weeks.
  • The Tri-County Corridor Trail will be detoured during construction.
    • The proposed detour is anticipated to be Bayfield Road to Center West Line Road to Elm Road. It will be coordinated with local officials, county highway department and the Tri-County Corridor Recreational Trail Commission.
    • Trail detour map
  • Local and emergency access will be maintained to adjacent properties.
