Barron County: US 8, Cameron to Ladysmith

Location

The limits for the proposed project on US 8 run from County SS South to 480 feet east of County SS North in the Barron County village of Cameron.

Overview

This segment of US 8 is reaching the end of its service life. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:

  • Reconstructing US 8 within the project limits with concrete pavement
  • Replacing storm sewer
  • Replacing curb and gutter to improve drainage
  • Replacing curb ramps at designated sidewalk crossings to meet current Americans With Disabilities Act standards
  • Adding some new sidewalk
  • Installing a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) from Sunnyside Avenue to the intersection with County W
    • A TWLTL is a lane between opposing lanes of traffic for the purpose of allowing vehicles from either direction to make left turns.
  • Replacing traffic signals at the intersection of US 8/County W/County SS

In addition, the village plans to replace sanitary sewer, water main lines and services as part of the project, and the railroad plans to replace the crossing surface and signals at the railroad crossing north of the intersection of US 8/County W/County SS and add a 100-foot concrete median.

Schedule

Construction currently is scheduled for 2029.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, US 8 is proposed to be closed to through traffic and detoured, but:

  • Access to properties in the work zone will be maintained; however, there might be short periods where driveway access is disrupted.
  • Work within the intersection of US 8/County SS/County W is proposed to be staged to maintain traffic in the area as much as possible.
    • Proposed detour for US 8 through traffic: County W
    • Proposed detour for County SS through traffic: County OO, US 53 and County O
    • A short-term full closure of County SS north of County W might be required to complete railroad crossing work.
    • Temporary pedestrian facilities are proposed to be provided where existing sidewalks are impacted by work.
