Location
The six structures through various sloughs are between the Chippewa River and east junction of WIS 25 in the Buffalo County town of Nelson.
Overview
Built in 1933, all bridges are reaching the end of their service lives. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing the following work at each bridge:
- Removing the existing bridge
- Constructing a new bridge to modern standards
- Evaluating the bridge length and the proposed pier placement to maintain waterway navigation and minimize conflicts with the existing bridge piers and abutments
- Reconstructing the roadway approach pavement to match the new bridge deck
- Replacing guardrail on the approaching roadway that are attached to the bridge
- Restoring the pavement markings and signage through the bridge site
Real Estate
Temporary easements might be required to complete the project.
Schedule
Estimated to take at least two years to complete, construction currently is scheduled to begin in 2030.
- The project start could be moved to 2029 if funding becomes available.
Traffic Impacts
During construction, WIS 35 will remain open to traffic.

At each bridge site, a temporary roadway and temporary bridge would be constructed to maintain traffic.

The project will likely implement two-lane temporary bypasses around each bridge site. During the design process, the use of single-lane conditions with traffic signals will be evaluated for feasibility as well.

Local and emergency access will be maintained through the work zone.

Boat access also will be maintained.
Public Involvement
WisDOT is seeking public input on the proposed project. In addition to general comments, please include any specific comments regarding potential work within the adjacent Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Tiffany Wildlife Area by July 11, 2025, by.
