Safety engineering

Transportation safety is a priority for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and is rooted within the department’s mission and policies to minimize the number of deaths, injuries and crashes on Wisconsin roads. WisDOT takes a multifaceted approach to roadway safety by addressing issues through engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency medical services. Through engineering, safety can be improved by designing roadways to minimize roadway speeds or reduce/eliminate areas of conflict between motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Improving safety is completed in multiple different ways from using low cost, high benefit countermeasures to alternative intersection and interchange designs. Below are different types of alternative intersections and interchanges, as well as other safety countermeasures implemented by WisDOT.
