Construction to resume on Jackson County bridge rehab project

Work in 2024 will be done to westbound I-94 bridges over Black River, railroad tracks

Release date: Feb. 19, 2024

Construction is scheduled to resume Monday, Feb. 26 on a multiyear project rehabilitating two sets of bridges on I-94 in Jackson County – one over the Black River in the city of Black River Falls and the other over the Union Pacific railroad tracks in the town of Brockway.

Built in 1967 and 1968 respectively, the bridges are showing signs of deterioration and in need of rehabilitation to extend their service lives. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to do the following for:

  • Bridges over the Black River:
    • Overlay both bridge decks with concrete.
    • Repair the abutment back walls.
    • Replace the bridge joints and concrete approach slabs.
  • Bridges over the Union Pacific railroad tracks:
    • Overlay the eastbound bridge deck with concrete and replace the deck on the westbound bridge.
    • Replace pier caps and concrete approach slabs.
    • Repaint girders.

Construction began in 2023, with the construction of median crossovers. In 2024, construction on the two westbound bridges will be completed before Memorial Day.

During construction, westbound I-94 traffic will be routed to the eastbound lanes via median crossovers before and after each bridge, and one lane each of west- and eastbound traffic will run directionally over the eastbound bridges.

Work on the eastbound bridges will be completed before Memorial Day in 2025, and the median crossovers will be removed that fall.

Lunda Construction Co. of Black River Falls is the prime contractor on the $5.2 million project.
