US 10 resurfacing project in Pepin County to start

Work includes resurfacing two stretches of highway, cleaning and repairing culverts

Release date: April 5, 2024

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $5.88 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on US 10 from the Pierce County line to County P west of Durand and from Durand Street to 950 feet east in the city of Durand. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, April 15; however, the contractor will begin placing construction stakes and installing erosion control measures the week of April 8.

The pavement is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project includes:

  • Removing a portion of the existing pavement and overlaying the roadway with new asphalt.
  • Cleaning and repairing culverts.
  • Cleaning ditches.
  • Replacing guardrail.

Work in 2024 will exclude the US 10/WIS 25 North intersection, where a safety improvement project is scheduled for 2026.

During 2024 construction, motorists will encounter the following impacts on these project sections:

  • From the Pierce County line to County P west of Durand:
    • Shoulder closures during culver repair and cleaning, ditch clearing and grubbing operations.
    • A lane closure near Thompson Lake during guardrail replacement.
    • A lane closure during pavement milling, resurfacing and replacing guardrail between the Pierce County line and north leg of WIS 25.
    • The closure of US 10 for culvert and guardrail replacement between 900 feet west of Arkansaw Creek and County D, with traffic detoured via County CC, WIS 72 and WIS 25.
      • During the closure, one traffic lane in the work zone will be maintained for access to properties.
      • When work is not occurring, two lanes on side roads will be maintained.
  • From Durand Street in the city of Durand to 950 feet east:
    • US 10 will remain open. During:
      • Stage 1:
        • The outside lanes of US 10 and shoulders will be closed, with traffic shifted to the inside lanes and median.
        • Access to and from Durand Street and 11th Avenue will be closed during this phase, but driveway access to the Shell station and McDonald's will be maintained.
        • Durand Street will be reopened when paving operations take place in front of a driveway.
      • Stage 2:
        • The inside lanes of US 10 and median will be closed, with traffic shifted to the outside lanes and shoulders.
        • Access to and from Durand Street and 11th Avenue will be reopened.
      • Stage 3:
        • During milling and resurfacing, lanes will be closed, with motorists directed by flaggers.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late August.
