Governor Evers approves northbound US 2/53 culvert project

Work includes lining two deteriorated culverts southeast of the city of Superior

Release date: October 16, 2023

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $623,268 contract with prime contractor Mattison Contractors, Inc. of Knapp for a culvert rehabilitation project on US 2/53 northwest of the intersection of US 2 and US 53 in the Douglas County town of Amnicon. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, Oct. 23.

Two culverts under the northbound lanes are severely deteriorated and no longer functioning properly. To address this, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Place liners in both culverts to restore proper drainage.

During construction, northbound US 2/53 will remain open to a single lane of traffic.

Construction in 2023 is scheduled for completion in November, with work – if necessary, resuming in 2024.
