Governor Evers approves US 12, WIS 40 resurfacing project

Construction information meeting planned for 10 days ahead of project start

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed an $8.99 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on two highway segments in Dunn County – US 12 from Princeton Drive in Elk Mound to just north of WIS 29 and WIS 40 from US 12 to County M in the village of Colfax.

Construction is scheduled to start on Monday, March 30. Monarch staff are holding a construction information meeting 10 days earlier to go over the scope of work, schedule and traffic impacts.

To address deteriorating pavement and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project includes:

  • Milling 2.25 inches of existing asphalt and paving 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt in rural areas
  • Milling 3.25 inches of existing asphalt and paving 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt in urban areas
  • Replacing joints on the Eighteen Mile Creek Bridge in village of Colfax
  • Placing centerline rumble strips in rural areas
  • Replacing cross culverts, guardrail and sidewalk curb ramps
  • Replacing the railroad crossing in the village of Colfax
    • This work will be completed by the railroad.
During construction:
  • WIS 40 is expected to be closed for a week for the railroad crossing replacement in the village.
    • Traffic will be detoured via 5th Avenue, Dunn Street and Railroad Avenue.
  • Traffic will be maintained using a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals during work on the Eighteen Mile Creek Bridge.
  • For remaining work, US 12 and WIS 40 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging or automated flagger assistance devices.
  • In addition, pedestrian traffic will be detoured during sidewalk curb ramp work.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early October.
