Governor Evers approves WIS 124 resurfacing project

Work set to resume on WIS 124 project that started in 2025

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed $2.68 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on WIS 124 from the Duncan Creek Bridge in Chippewa Falls to County S in the town of Eagle Point, all in Chippewa County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, April 13.

In addition, construction is scheduled to resume Monday, April 6 on an improvement project on southbound WIS 124 from the Duncan Creek Bridge to North Bridge Street, which began in 2025.

A construction information meeting is planned to discuss the proposed work on both projects, schedules and traffic impacts.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project from the Duncan Creek Bridge to North Bridge Street includes:

  • Removing and replacing deteriorated pavement in the intersection of Bay and West River streets
  • Modifying traffic signals at West Columbia Street, West Grand Avenue, West Central Street, West Spring Street and West River Street

The following work is planned from Duncan Creek to County S:

  • Milling off a portion of the pavement and placing new asphalt pavement
  • Resurfacing the County S roundabout and replacing the central island truck apron pavement
  • Replacing joints on the Duncan Creek Bridge
  • Replacing culverts
  • Cleaning ditches
  • Upgrading sidewalk curb ramps
  • Replacing pavement markings

During construction on the segment from the Duncan Creek Bridge to North Bridge Street, southbound WIS 124 will be closed starting at West Spring Street, and Business 29 (West River Street) will be closed from Bay Street to North Bridge Street. BUS 29 traffic will be detoured via the following:

  • Detour for eastbound BUS 29 and southbound WIS 124 motorists: Island Street, West Central Street and North Bridge Street. 
  • Detour for westbound BUS 29 motorists: Northbound WIS 124 (Rushman Drive and North High Street), southbound WIS 124 (Elm, West Cedar and Bay streets), West Spring Street and Island Street.

During construction from Duncan Creek to County S, northbound WIS 124 will be closed at the County S roundabout for about three weeks. Traffic will be detoured via BUS 29 (West River Street), US 53 and County B. Motorists will encounter lane shifts and shoulder closures for remaining work.

Construction on the segment from the Duncan Creek Bridge to North Bridge Street is scheduled for completion in mid-May. Work on the segment from Duncan Creek to County S is scheduled for completion in mid-June.
