Construction on US 53 bypass in both directions set to resume

Work to result in lane closures north and south of US 12 (Clairemont Avenue)

Release date: March 25, 2026

Construction on an improvement project on US 53 between Golf Road in Eau Claire and 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie is set to resume the week of April 6.

Construction began in 2025 on the project aimed at addressing pavement deterioration on US 53 and its interchange ramps. Work in 2026 includes:

  • Replacing the pavement approaching the Otter Creek bridges
  • Making additional repairs in that area
  • Placing pavement markings

During construction, US 53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures north and south of US 12 (Clairemont Avenue) in both directions. The ramps to US 12 and WIS 93 from north- and southbound US 53 will remain open.

The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced and enforced, and motorists should expect traffic backups during periods of peak traffic.

Chippewa Concrete Services, Inc. of Chippewa Falls is the prime contractor on the $10 million project.

Construction is scheduled for completion before Memorial Day.
