Governor Evers approves WIS 85 resurfacing project

Portion of Dunn County project will be completed under detour

Release date: April 3, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $3.94 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on WIS 85 from just west of the north junction of County O to approximately 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street in Dunn County. The project gaps the Rock Creek Bridge, which was replaced in 2021. Construction is anticipated to start the third week in April.

The contractor will hold a construction information meeting prior to the start of work to share details about the project scope, schedule and traffic impacts.

  • When: 10 a.m. Friday, April 10
  • Where: Rock Creek Town Hall, N995 County H, Mondovi

This segment of WIS 85 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:

  • Removing a portion of the existing pavement from just west of the north junction of County O to the south junction of County H and placing new pavement
  • Removing and recycling a portion of the existing pavement from the south junction of County H to approximately 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street and overlaying the roadway with new pavement
  • Widening the paved shoulders from 3 to 5 feet
  • Installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips from the south junction of County H to about 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street
  • Replacing the existing drainage structure under WIS 85 east of the north junction of County H with a dual box culvert
  • Replacing a cattle pass that is no longer used with a culvert pipe
  • Removing guardrail
  • Improving the Chippewa River State Trail crossing to meet Americans With Disabilities Act standards

During construction, WIS 85 will be closed for up to 50 working days, with through traffic detoured via US 10 and WIS 37. Remaining work will be completed with lane closures controlled by flagging.

Access to businesses and residences in the work zone will be maintained, but temporary driveway closures will be necessary during parts of construction. Project staff will contact property owners in advance of closing a driveway. The Chippewa River State Trail also will remain open.

Construction is scheduled for completion in mid-August.
