Meeting set for April 13 to share details about two US 63 projects in Barron County
Release date: April 7, 2026
To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $2.39 million contract with prime contractor Pheifer Brothers Construction Co., Inc. of Neenah for an improvement project on US 63 at Beaver Dam Lake in the Barron County city of Cumberland. Construction is expected to start in mid- to late April.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) plans to hold a construction information meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 13 at Cumberland City Hall, 950 1st Ave., to go over the proposed work, schedule and traffic impacts for this project and a resurfacing project on US 63 from Charrie Lane to the Washburn County line. Construction on the latter is scheduled to start Monday, April 13.
US 63: Beaver Dam Lake
To improve boat access on Beaver Dam Lake, the WisDOT project is:
- Removing the existing box culvert carrying Beaver Dam Lake under US 63
- Building a bridge with a longer span to replace the box culvert
- The profile of US 63 will be raised slightly at the bridge location.
- Removing the Lake Street Bridge
- This structure won’t be replaced. At the conclusion of construction, Lake Street will no longer be a through street.
- Dredging Beaver Dam Lake under US 63 and the Lake Street Bridge
- The dredging and the placement of a longer bridge will allow greater vertical and horizontal clearance in the channel that connects the north and south basins of Beaver Dam Lake, which will allow enhanced recreational boat traffic.
- Building an ATV trail on the east side of US 63 from Arcade Avenue to Nedvidek Street
- The new bridge will include a 10-foot lane for ATVs.
- Reconstructing US 63 on both sides of the new bridge
- Reconstructing portions of Lake Street, Nedvidek Street and Babcock Avenue to match the raised profile of US 63
- Constructing curb, gutter and sidewalk
During construction, US 63 will be closed at Beaver Dam Lake, and through traffic will be detoured via WIS 48, US 53 and WIS 70.
Construction on this project is scheduled for completion in the third week of August.
US 63: Charrie Lane to Washburn County line
This segment of US 63 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:
- Removing a portion of the existing pavement and paving new asphalt
- Installing centerline and edge line rumble strips
- Cleaning or repairing culverts
- Reconstructing sidewalk curb ramps to Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance
- Placing new pavement markings
During construction, US 63 will remain open, but motorists will encounter daytime single-lane closures controlled by flagging operations. In addition, temporary driveway closures will be necessary to complete construction, but property owners will be notified in advance of such a closure.
Construction is scheduled for completion in mid-June.
