Governor Evers approves WIS 105 bridge construction project

Work includes replacing undersized culvert carrying a tributary of the Pokegama River

Release date: June 8, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $3.06 million contract with prime contractor Northland Constructors of Duluth to remove a culvert that carries an unnamed tributary of the Pokegama River under WIS 105 and build a bridge in the Douglas County city of Superior. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, June 15.

The culvert is undersized. To address this, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project includes:

  • Removing the existing culvert
  • Building a temporary bypass to carry a single lane of traffic during construction
  • Constructing a bridge to replace the culvert
  • Replacing pavement approaching the new structure
  • Installing guardrail
  • Removing the temporary bypass
  • Repairing slopes disturbed by construction

During construction, WIS 105 remain open to passenger vehicle traffic, but motorists will encounter daytime single-lane closures controlled by flagging during construction of a temporary single-lane bypass on the south side of the road. Once built, motorists will use the bypass – controlled by temporary traffic signals – to get around the work zone. Heavy truck traffic will be detoured via MN 23, US 2 and WIS 35.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late October.
