Governor Evers approves US 63 project in Drummond

Construction on multiyear project includes removing box culvert/dam structure, realigning a stream, constructing a bridge

Release date: July 10, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $4.59 million contract with prime contractor Northern Interstate Construction, Inc. of Superior for a multiyear project removing a box culvert/dam structure that carries the Long Lake branch under US 63 in Drummond and replacing it with a bridge. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, July 13.

Built in 1931, the box culvert is at the end of its service life. In 2026, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) project is:

  • Drawing down Mill Pond
  • Realigning the Long Lake branch
  • Building a bypass to carry a single lane of traffic during 2027 construction

Work in 2027 includes removing the box culvert/dam structure, constructing a bridge to replace the box culvert, removing the temporary bypass and placing new pavement markings.

During construction in 2026, US 63 will remain open to traffic during most of the construction season, but motorists will encounter a single lane of travel controlled by temporary traffic signals from mid-July to at least mid-September. Installation of a temporary culvert pipe will result in US 63 being closed for up to seven calendar days. During that period, traffic will be detoured via County N, County A, US 2 and US 63.

During construction in 2027, US 63 will remain open, but motorists will use a single-lane bypass to get around the work zone.

Construction in 2026 is scheduled for completion in late fall. Work will then be shut down for the winter and resume in spring.
