WisDOT Northwest Region Construction Update - July 17

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides weekly updates on road construction projects in the following counties in northwest Wisconsin: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Ashland County

Prentice Avenue
  • Location: US 2 (Lake Shore Drive) to 6th Street East in Ashland
  • Schedule: May 4 to early June
  • Cost: $845,876
  • Description of work: Replacing the existing pavement structure, making subgrade improvements, modifying the vertical profile of the road to allow for better tie-ins, replacing substandard curb ramps, curb and gutter, adding two inlets just south of 3rd Street and replacing pavement markings and signage
  • Traffic impacts: Prentice Avenue is closed.
County GG
  • Location: McCarthy Creek Bridge southwest of Mellen
  • Schedule: May 26 to late July
  • Cost: $665,275
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge, reconstructing the pavement on both sides of the bridge and replacing guardrail
  • Traffic impacts: County GG is closed from Conley Road to Clam Lake Road
    • Traffic is being detoured via WIS 13 and WIS 77.
WIS 77
  • Location: WIS 13 in Mellen to the Iron County line
  • Schedule: July 6 to early October
  • Cost: $3.59 million
  • Description of work: Milling off a portion of the existing pavement and placing new pavement; replacing storm sewer; installing centerline rumble strips; overlaying the deck on the Devil's Creek Bridge in Mellen; cleaning, removing or replacing culverts; replacing culvert end walls; replacing or removing guardrail; and placing new pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 77 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:
    • Single-lane closures controlled by flagging
    • Single-lane closures on the Devil’s Creek Bridge controlled by temporary traffic signals between Olson and Christ Lutz roads from Monday, July 20 to mid-August

Ashland and Sawyer counties

WIS 13 and WIS 77
  • Location: WIS 13, Price County line to Morse Road between Mellen and Glidden, and WIS 77, Teal River Bridge northeast of Hayward
  • Schedule: WIS 13, April 27 to late October; Work on WIS 77 expected to start in August
  • Cost: $5.19 million
  • Description of work: WIS 13, replacing, resetting, extending or abandoning more than 50 existing culvert pipes and constructing a new box culvert at Becky Creek; making concrete surface repairs at the bridge over Dryden Creek northwest of Glidden; patching the deck on the bridge over the Chippewa River southeast of Glidden; overlaying the deck with concrete on the bridge over Butternut Creek south of Butternut; and replacing guardrail at the structures and one other location in the project limits; WIS 77, milling and overlaying the existing bridge deck, overlaying concrete pavement approach slabs, milling and overlaying roadway approaches, making concrete surface repairs on parapets, grouting voids under abutments, supplementing riprap at abutments, adjusting guardrail and installing new pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 13 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:
    • Single-lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals at Becky Creek and active culvert pipe installations
      • Signals at Becky Creek are in place continuously.
    • Those at culvert pipe locations are in place during work hours only.
  • Single-lane closures controlled by flagging during paving at culvert sites - typically on Fridays

Barron County

County O
  • Location: East Branch Upper Pine Creek Bridge north of the village of Dallas
  • Schedule: June 15 to early August
  • Cost: $ $501,425
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge and reconstructing 149.5 feet of approaching roadway
  • Traffic impacts: County O is closed at the structure, and traffic is being detoured via County D, WIS 25 and County U.
County O
  • Location: Wisconsin Avenue intersection in Rice Lake
  • Schedule: April 20 to late September
  • Cost: $1.1 million
  • Description of work: Realigning and extending the County O left-turn lanes, constructing right-turn lanes both north and south along Wisconsin Avenue, replacing traffic signals and adding sidewalk and a pedestrian crossing on County O
  • Traffic impacts: All lanes are open, but motorists will encounter temporary lane closures during sidewalk construction at the southwest corner of the County O/Wisconsin Avenue intersection..
US 53 South
  • Location: Bridges between Cameron and New Auburn: structures over US 8, Knapp Street, County A, County AA and Carlson School Road, 2025, and structures over 20th Street, County I and the Chetek River, 2026
  • Schedule: Feb. 23 to October, 2026 construction; and May 5, 2025, to October 2026, overall project
  • Cost: $10.91 million
  • Description of 2026 work: Replacing the decks on the bridges over the Chetek River and 20th Street; replacing the bridge over County I; milling pavement on both sides of each structure and placing new asphalt pavement on the approaches; milling and overlaying the pavement on the southbound US 53 on- and off-ramps at the County I interchange; and replacing guardrail, pavement markings and signage
  • Traffic impacts: Southbound US 53 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:
    • Single-lane closures on southbound US 53 and a reduced speed limit of 60 mph.
    • Single-lane closures on County I through the duration of the project
    • Closure of the ramp from County I to southbound US 53
      • Traffic is being detoured on northbound US 53 to the US 8 interchange, where motorists will exit and then re-enter southbound US 53.
      • The ramp closure is anticipated to be in place through late September.
US 63
  • Location: Charrie Lane in Cumberland to the Washburn County line
  • Schedule: April 13 to late June
  • Cost: $$4.64 million
  • Description of work: Removing a portion of the existing pavement and paving new asphalt, installing centerline and edge line rumble strips, cleaning or repairing culverts, reconstructing sidewalk curb ramps to Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and placing new pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: None; project complete.
US 63
  • Location: Beaver Dam Lake
  • Schedule: April 24 to early September
  • Cost: $2.64 million
  • Description of work: Removing the existing box culvert carrying Beaver Dam Lake under US 63, building a bridge with a longer span to replace the box culvert, removing the Lake Street Bridge, dredging Beaver Dam Lake under US 63 and the Lake Street Bridge, building an ATV trail on the east side of US 63 from Arcade Avenue to Nedvidek Street, reconstructing US 63 on both sides of the new bridge, reconstructing portions of Lake Street, Nedvidek Street and Babcock Avenue to match the raised profile of US 63 and constructing curb, gutter and sidewalk
  • Traffic impacts: US 63 is closed to traffic on both sides of the structure.
    • Traffic is being detoured via WIS 48, US 53 and WIS 70.
    • In addition, Lake Street is closed just past the boat landing.
      • Access to the boat landing is being maintained.
      • The Lake Street Bridge is open to emergency vehicles only through late July or early August.

Bayfield County

WIS 13
  • Location: Lake Superior Wayside between Iron River and Port Wing about 0.48 mile west of Airport Road
  • Schedule: July 13 to late November
  • Cost: $3.98 million
  • Description of work: On the shoreline from the west property line to Jardine Creek: Armoring the toe of the slope using a 6-inch-thick layer of bedding stone, a 3-foot-thick layer of underlying stone and a 6-foot-thick layer of armor stone; excavating a 4:1 slope from the newly constructed armored to the top of the existing slope; and stabilizing the excavated slope with turf reinforcement mat and garden with topsoil and seed. At the wayside: Milling 2 inches of existing asphalt and paving 2 inches of new asphalt in the parking lot and WIS 13 entrance; upgrading the walking path to meet Americans With Disabilities Act standards by grading base aggregate and overlaying with 2 inches of new asphalt; replacing the culvert and apron end walls below the walking path to the lake and at the WIS 13 entrance to the wayside; replacing the timber guard posts bordering the parking area; and repairing the crack in the concrete slab under the pavilion
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 13 remains open with minimal impacts to traffic, but the wayside is closed for the duration of work.

WIS 13

  • Location: Little Whittlesey Creek
  • Schedule: June 8 to mid-October
  • Cost: $1.5 million
  • Description of work: Constructing a temporary bypass to carry WIS 13 traffic during construction, replacing the culvert pipes with a bridge, milling and paving about 1,000 feet of pavement approaching the bridge, restoring the stream bed, installing new guardrail, relocating the driveway of the US Fish and Wildlife Service facility, adding riprap and removing the temporary bypass
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 13 remains open to traffic, but motorists are using a temporary bypass to travel around the construction site.
US 2
  • Location: North Fish Creek Bridge southwest of the intersection of US 2 and WIS 13
  • Schedule: April 13 to mid-July
  • Cost: $1.69 million
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge deck, repairing an abutment, resetting an inlet, completing minor paving on both sides of the bridge to adjust and smooth out roadway approaches and adjusting guardrail
  • Traffic impacts: US 2 is reduced to a single lane at the bridge.
    • The open lane has a maximum width of 13 feet.
    • Temporary traffic signals are controlling use of the single lane.
      • Motorists should expect delays.
      • The bridge is expected to fully open to traffic by mid-week the week of July 20.
    • The alternative oversize-overweight truck route follows US 53, WIS 77, WIS 13 and WIS 112.
US 63
  • Location: Long Lake branch in Drummond
  • Schedule: July 13 to late November, 2026 construction; project will shut down for winter, with work resuming in spring 2027
  • Cost: $4.59 million
  • Description of work in 2026: Drawing down Mill Pond, realigning the Long Lake branch and building a bypass to carry a single lane of traffic during 2027 construction
  • Traffic impacts: US 63 remains open to a single lane of traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals between Delta Drummond Road to Drummond Lake Road.

Buffalo County

County P
  • Location: Trempealeau River Bridge east of Fountain City in the town of Buffalo
  • Schedule: Feb. 23 to mid-October
  • Cost: $1.78 million
  • Description: Building a temporary bypass and structure, replacing the bridge, reconstructing roadway approaches and removing the temporary bypass and structure.
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists are using a temporary road and bridge to bypass the work zone.
    • They might encounter flagging at the site for hauling in equipment and materials.
    • In addition, buoys have been added upstream and downstream to alert boating traffic of construction.
WIS 35 and WIS 54
  • Location: WIS 35, Indian Creek Road to old WIS 35; and WIS 54, Minnesota state line to WIS 35
  • Schedule: April 23 to early July
  • Cost: $6.41 million
  • Description of work: WIS 35: Milling and overlaying the asphaltic pavement; repairing or replacing culverts to address deterioration; adjusting, repairing or replacing guardrail; improving drainage along WIS 35 just west of Lovers Lane; upgrading curb ramps to meet Americans With Disabilities Act standards; installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips; and adding new pavement markings; WIS 54: Milling and overlaying the asphaltic pavement, replacing weigh-in-motion sensors in the roadway; installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips; and adding new pavement markings
  • Traffic Impacts: None; current work operations are suspended until mid-August.
US 10
  • Location: Pepin County line to County A in Mondovi
  • Schedule: June 30 to late August
  • Cost: $3.35 million
  • Description of work: Milling the pavement surface and overlaying the roadway with asphalt, installing centerline rumble strips; replacing guardrail and flattening slopes at guardrail end terminals; cleaning, repairing or replacing culvert pipes; cleaning ditches to remove sediment buildup; and installing new pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: US 10 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging.

Burnett County

WIS 35
  • Location: Lanquist Street in Siren to WIS 70 East
  • Schedule: May 4 to mid-October
  • Cost: $8.55 million
  • Description of work: Replacing pavement with new concrete from Lanquist Street to Southshore Drive, replacing storm sewer and expanding its capacity from Lanquist to Works Progress Street, resurfacing the roadway from Southshore Drive to WIS 70 East, reviewing and revising access points, improving turning movements in all quadrants at the WIS 35 and WIS 70/County B intersection in the city of Siren, replacing traffic signals, replacing curb ramps and removing extra lanes from Park Street to Northshore Drive to reduce flooding potential
  • Traffic impacts: Once work resumes Tuesday, May 26, motorists will encounter:
    • Shoulder closures on northbound WIS 35 from Lanquist Street to Bradley Street; southbound WIS 35 from the WIS 35/70 intersection to Bacon Street; and east- and westbound WIS 70 from 1st Avenue to the WIS 35/70 intersection
    • Various shoulder closures on north- and southbound US 53 from Southshore Drive to WIS 35/70 roundabout
    • Closure of WIS 35 to northbound traffic from Lanquist Street to Southshore Drive
      • WIS 35 is open to southbound traffic only in that segment.
      • Northbound car detour: County B, 4th Avenue North and Elizabeth Street
      • Truck detour: WIS 70/MN 70, I-35 (MN), MN 48/WIS 77 and WIS 35

Chippewa County

WIS 124
  • Location: Duncan Creek Bridge to County S
  • Schedule: April 13 to mid-June
  • Cost: $2.68 million
  • Description of work: Milling off a portion of the pavement and placing new asphalt pavement, resurfacing the County S roundabout and replacing the central island truck apron pavement, replacing culverts, cleaning ditches, upgrading sidewalk curb ramps and replacing pavement markings
  • Traffic Impacts: None currently, but the roundabout at WIS 124/County S is scheduled to close to traffic on Monday, July 20.
    • The closure is anticipated to be in place for 17 working days.
    • Traffic will be detoured via Business 29 (West River Street), US 53 and County B.

Chippewa and Clark counties

WIS 29
  • Location: 320th Street east of Boyd to Koser Avenue west of Thorp
  • Schedule: May 11 to mid-September
  • Cost: $9.35 million
  • Description of work: Patching the concrete pavement, placing 3.75 inches of asphalt over the existing roadway, removing a portion of the existing pavement on the WIS 29 on- and off-ramps at the County H interchange in Stanley and on County H between the east- and westbound ramps and placing new asphalt pavement, repairing culverts as needed, rehabilitating the structure over Hay Creek east of Boyd and closing and removing the intersection on WIS 29 at 320th Street per the town of Delmar’s request
  • Traffic impacts: None; WIS 29 is fully open to traffic through 6 a.m. Monday, July 20. At that time, crews will close lanes in both directions for the length of the work zone.

Clark County

WIS 29
  • Location: County D in Owen to WIS 13 in Abbotsford
  • Schedule: March 30 to early October
  • Cost: $17.37 million
  • Description of work: Repairing the existing concrete pavement on WIS 29 and the ramps at the County E interchange and then overlaying the roadway and ramps with asphalt pavement; overlaying the ramps at Cardinal Avenue east of Owen and Hi Line Avenue in Abbotsford with asphalt; replacing guardrail to meet current WisDOT standards; repairing the decks on the east- and westbound WIS 29 bridges over County D and the railroad tracks to the east and placing a thin bonded polymer overlay over them; cleaning and repairing culverts to improve drainage; repairing the median inlets near Owen adjacent to concrete barrier wall; and completing minor grading of ditches
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 29 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:
    • Outside lane closures in both directions from County D to County E and the Dill Creek Bridge east of Curtiss to WIS 13
    • Closure of eastbound WIS 29 on- and off-ramps at the County E interchange in the Curtiss area
      • The ramp closures are expected to be in place for two weeks.
WIS 98
  • Location: WIS 73 south of Greenwood to Helm Street in Loyal
  • Schedule: July 2 through mid-September
  • Cost: $1.8 million
  • Description of work: Replacing the existing concrete pavement in select areas of pavement failure due to poor soils; replacing base material and adding geo-grid in those poor soils areas; making concrete joint repairs in other areas; replacing, repairing, resetting, extending or cleaning culvert pipes; and replacing pavement markings
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 98 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging operations.

Douglas County

County B
  • Location: Lake Nebagamon Creek Bridge east of US 53
  • Schedule: May 18 to mid-July
  • Cost: $565,907
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge, reconstructing pavement on both sides of the bridge and grading
  • Traffic Impacts: None; project complete.
WIS 13
  • Location: Bridge over US 2/53 southeast of Superior
  • Schedule: June 8 to late July
  • Cost: $1.43
  • Description of work: Replacing bridge joints, making surface repairs to abutments, cleaning and painting bridge girders and bearings, replacing concrete approach slabs at each end of bridge, replacing asphalt roadway approaches for about 100 feet and replacing the guardrail bridge connections
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 13 and US 2/53 remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter:
    • Single-lane closures on WIS 13 controlled by temporary traffic signals
    • Single-lane and shoulder closures on US 2/53 once shoulder strengthening and bridge girder painting work begin
WIS 105
  • Location: Unnamed tributary of the Pokegama River in Superior
  • Schedule: June 15 to late October
  • Cost: $3.06 million
  • Description of work: Removing the existing culvert, building a temporary bypass to carry a single lane of traffic during construction, constructing a bridge to replace the culvert, replacing pavement approaching the new structure, installing guardrail, removing the temporary bypass and repairing slopes disturbed by construction
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 105 remains open to traffic, but motorists are using a single-lane bypass controlled by temporary traffic signals.
    • Truck traffic is being detoured.
      • Truck traffic heading west will be detoured north to US 2 and MN 23 at 61st Street and Tower Avenue.
      • Truck traffic heading east will be detoured north to MN 23 and US 2 and MN 23 and East McCuen Street in Duluth, Minn.

Dunn County

County D
  • Location: Red Cedar River Bridge
  • Schedule: July 6 to mid-August
  • Cost: $816,921
  • Description of work: Overlaying the bridge deck with concrete and repairing pier scour
  • Traffic Impacts: County D is closed at the structure.
County P
  • Location: Irving Creek west of Menomonie
  • Schedule: May 18 to early July
  • Cost: $547,773
  • Description of work: Replacing the structure with a twin-cell box culvert and reconstructing pavement on both sides of the new structure
  • Traffic Impacts: None; project complete.
County Q
  • Location: North Branch Wilson Creek Bridge northwest of Knapp
  • Schedule: June 8 to late July
  • Cost: $430,297
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge and reconstructing pavement on both sides of the new structure
  • Traffic Impacts: County Q is closed at the structure.
WIS 25
  • Location: I-94 in Menomonie to County D
  • Schedule: April 16 to early August
  • Cost: $4.98 million
  • Description of work: Removing a portion of the existing pavement from the bridge over I-94 to the railroad bridge and placing new asphalt pavement; recycling a portion of the existing pavement, mixing it with a stabilizing agent, relaying it and placing new asphalt over the roadway from the railroad bridge to County D; adjusting or replacing guardrail; and upgrading pedestrian curb ramps and traffic signals
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 25 is open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging.
WIS 85
  • Location: Just west of the north junction of County O west of Rock Falls to approximately 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street northeast of Caryville
  • Schedule: April 27 to mid-August
  • Cost: $3.94 million
  • Description of work: Removing a portion of the existing pavement from just west of the north junction of County O to the south junction of County H and placing new pavement, removing and recycling a portion of the existing pavement from the south junction of County H to approximately 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street and overlaying the roadway with new pavement, widening the paved shoulders from 3 to 5 feet, installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips from the south junction of County H to about 2,100 feet west of 1010th Street, replacing the existing drainage structure under WIS 85 east of the north junction of County H with a dual box culvert, replacing a cattle pass that is no longer used with a culvert pipe, removing guardrail and improving the Chippewa River State Trail crossing to meet Americans With Disabilities Act standards
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 85 is open, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging.
US 12 and WIS 40
  • Location: US 12: Princeton Drive in Elk Mound to just north of WIS 29; and WIS 40, US 12 to County M in the village of Colfax
  • Schedule: March 30 to October
  • Cost: $8.99 million
  • Description of work: Milling 2.25 inches of existing asphalt and paving 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt in rural areas; milling 3.25 inches of existing asphalt and paving 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt in urban areas; replacing joints on the Eighteen Mile Creek Bridge in village of Colfax; placing centerline rumble strips in rural areas; replacing cross culverts, guardrail and sidewalk curb ramps; and replacing the railroad crossing in the village of Colfax
  • Traffic Impacts: Motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging operations from Elk Mound through Colfax.
    • The bridge carrying US 12 over WIS 29 northwest of Elk Mound reopened to traffic this morning.
    • WIS 40 is anticipated to be fully closed south of 855th Street from Monday to Friday, July 20-24.
      • The closure is located about halfway between N8335 WIS 40 and 855th Street.
      • Traffic will be detoured via WIS 29, I-94, WIS 25 and WIS 170.

Eau Claire County

WIS 93, WIS 312 and US 12
  • Location: WIS 93: East Hamilton Avenue, Eau Claire, to Deerfield Road, town of Washington; WIS 312: Old Wells Road to US 53, all in Eau Claire; and US 12: Truax Boulevard, Eau Claire, to Mayer Road, Altoona
  • Schedule: March 30 to mid-September
  • Cost: $2.91 million
  • Description of work: Reconstructing noncompliant curb ramps and upgrading pedestrian crossings that aren’t consistent or not fully provided where needed
  • Traffic Impacts: Motorists might encounter short-term nighttime lane closures on US 12 and WIS 93 as pavement marking work is completed. 
I-94
  • Location: US 53 interchange to Mallard Road southwest of Eau Claire
  • Schedule: March 23 to late November, 2026 construction; and March 4, 2024, to late November 2026, overall project
  • Cost: $69.9 million
  • Description of 2026 work: Replacing the pavement on eastbound I-94 from Otter Creek to Mallard Road, the eastbound bridges over County J and County D and the box culvert carrying Kluckman Valley Creek under eastbound I-94 near County D; completing shoulders, removing temporary lanes and structures and restoring the interstate’s median
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter lane closures in both directions during off-peak travel times.
    • The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph in the work zone.
    • County D is closed at I-94.
      • Traffic is being detoured via US 53, County D, County IJ and County JJ.

Jackson County

Cain Road
  • Location: North Branch Trempealeau River Bridge north of Hixton
  • Schedule: June 29 through early October
  • Cost: $665,514
  • Description of work: Building a new bridge north of the existing alignment, reconstructing approximately 1,020 feet of roadway approaches, excavating a marsh, grubbing, placing riprap and removing the existing structure
  • Traffic Impacts: The north shoulder is closed.

Pepin County

Dorwins Mill Road
  • Location: Bear Creek Bridge east of Durand
  • Schedule: May 18 to late July
  • Cost: $679,659
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge and reconstructing roadway on both sides of the structure
  • Traffic Impacts: Dorwins Mill Road is closed at the bridge.
US 10
  • Location: WIS 25 North intersection west of Durand
  • Schedule: July 7 to early November
  • Cost: $2.62 million
  • Description of work: Constructing a single-lane roundabout at the intersection, installing curb and gutter, replacing culverts and storm sewer and installing lighting
  • Traffic Impacts: US 10 and WIS 25 North will remain open to traffic during construction, but motorists will encounter:
    • Shoulder closures throughout the duration of the project
    • Switches to temporary lanes throughout the staging of reconstruction of the intersection
    • Intermittent flagging operations during each stage

Polk County

WIS 46
  • Location: US 8 to WIS 35
  • Schedule: April 15 to early October
  • Cost: $8.49 million
  • Description of work: Recycling 4 inches of pavement in place on the rural portion of the project; placing 2.75 inches of new asphalt and installing centerline rumble strips; milling 3.25 inches of pavement in the village of Balsam Lake and placing 3.35 inches of new asphalt; cleaning, extending, lining or replacing culverts; replacing or adjusting existing guardrail; and replacing curb ramps in the village of Balsam Lake
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter moving single-lane closures controlled by flagging on open segments of WIS 46.
    • WIS 46 is closed from 140th Avenue to 150th Avenue but is expected to reopen to traffic the week of July 20.
US 8
  • Location: WIS 35 North to WIS 46 South
  • Schedule: May 11 to late August
  • Cost: $7.52 million
  • Description of work: Milling 2.25 inches of existing asphaltic surface and placing 3.25 inches new asphalt; reconstructing two locations of roadway where sloughing is occurring; widening the paved shoulders from 3 to 5 feet; installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips; cleaning, extending, lining or replacing existing culverts and replacing deteriorating end walls on some structures; replacing or adjusting guardrail; and completing roadside maintenance, including clearing and ditching
  • Traffic impacts: US 8 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging operations at various locations in the project limits.
    • Motorists should expect delays.

Rusk County

US 8
  • Location: Little Soft Maple Creek northwest of Weyerhaeuser
  • Schedule: June 23 to late September
  • Cost: $1.92 million
  • Description of work: Constructing a temporary bypass on the north side of US 8 to carry traffic during construction, removing the existing box culvert, constructing a single-span bridge half at a time to replace it, replacing roadway approach pavement on both sides of the structure and installing guardrail
  • Traffic impacts: US 8 remains open to a single-lane of traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals.

St. Croix County

WIS 35/64 and WIS 64
  • Location: WIS 35/64, 150th Avenue northeast of Houlton to County C, and WIS 64, WIS 35 to 142nd Street in New Richmond
  • Schedule: April 13 to September
  • Cost: $9.96 million
  • Description of work: Performing spot repairs on the driving lanes in both directions where deterioration exists, overlaying existing concrete with asphalt at select locations in both directions of travel, installing new pavement markings and shoulder rumble strips, resurfacing the existing shoulders, replacing guardrail at structures and signage and cleaning or riprapping culvert end walls
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 35/64 and WIS 64 remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures in both directions.
WIS 128
  • Location: US 12 to WIS 170 in Glenwood City
  • Schedule: May 26 to late August
  • Cost: $6.08 million
  • Description of work: Recycling 3.75 inches of the existing asphaltic surface and paving 2.75 inches over the recycled pavement in the rural section of the project; milling approximately 3.25 inches of the existing asphaltic surface and paving the roadway with 3.25 inches of hot-mix asphalt in the urban section; placing centerline rumble strips; overlaying the deck on the bridge over Tiffany Creek in Glenwood City; updating guardrail throughout the project corridor; cleaning or replacing culvert pipes; updating sidewalk curb ramps in Glenwood City; and installing new pavement markings
  • Traffic Impacts: WIS 128 is open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging.
I-94
  • Location: Bridges over Kinney Road and 100th Street between Roberts and Hudson
  • Schedule: March 30 to mid-October, 2026 construction; and Sept. 9, 2024, to mid-October 2026, overall project
  • Cost: $20.08 million
  • Description of 2026 work: Removing and replacing the eastbound I-94 bridges; replacing I-94 pavement on both sides of structures in both directions; installing storm sewer; replacing guardrail and pavement markings; removing temporary structures and travel lanes; and restoring the median
  • Traffic Impacts: I-94 remains open to traffic, but:
    • Eastbound I-94 traffic is operating on temporary lanes built in the median in the 100th Street and Kinney Road work zones.
      • The speed limit in those work zones has been reduced to 60 mph.
I-94
  • Location: St. Croix River bridges between Hudson and Lakeland, Minn.
  • Schedule: April 6 to late October, 2026 construction; Sept. 29, 2025, to late October 2026, overall construction
  • Cost: $9.85 million
  • Description of 2026 work: Construction on both bridges includes: Replacing the modular and expansion joints, placing a new polymer overlay on the bridge decks, making concrete surface repairs, cleaning of bridge bearings and replacing pavement markings. Construction on the westbound bridge also includes: Making repairs on the east and west abutment back walls, completing spot painting of bridge pin and hanger system. Construction on the eastbound bridge also includes: Repairing the east abutment back wall and replacing the sidewalk railing. Construction on the retaining wall on the Wisconsin approach: Replacing the block wall crossing under and adjacent to I-94 and parallel to the pedestrian path.
  • Traffic impacts: I-94 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter the following on:
    • Eastbound I-94:
      • Three lanes are open to traffic, with lanes reduced to an 11-foot width.
    • Westbound I-94:
      • Two lanes are open to traffic, but one lane has been shifted onto the eastbound bridge.
      • The traffic split begins near the 11th Street overpass.
    • Westbound I-94 will be reduced to a single lane east of the Carmichael Road interchange (exit 2) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for four nights beginning Monday, July 20 to complete concrete patching between the Carmichael interchange and the St. Croix River Bridge.
      • The pavement repair work also will result in the closure of the ramp to WIS 35 North (exit 1) from 9 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.
    • Hudson to Lakeland/Afton Trail:
      • The trail is anticipated to close to users Monday, June 22 just north of the westbound I-94 bridge on the Wisconsin side and just south of the eastbound bridge on the Minnesota side.
      • During closure of the trail, a shuttle service will make three roundtrips across the bridges daily, picking up passengers on the Wisconsin side first at 7 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. Sundays through Saturdays at the following.
        • Wisconsin side: Boat launch parking lot on WIS 35 across the street from the wastewater treatment plant, 505 3rd St., Hudson
        • Minnesota side: Southwest corner of Hudson Road North and Quinlan Avenue North in Lakeland

Sawyer County

County D
  • Location: Chippewa River Bridge east of Exeland in the town of Weirgor
  • Schedule: March 23 to late July
  • Cost: $1.08 million
  • Description: Replacing the bridge deck, making concrete surface repairs to the abutments, piers and girders, completing bridge joint, shoulder and guardrail work and replacing the roadway approach pavement
  • Traffic impacts: County D is closed at the Chippewa River.
    • Traffic is being detoured via WIS 40, WIS 70 and WIS 27.

Sawyer and Price counties

WIS 70
  • Location: County GG in the unincorporated community of Loretta in Sawyer County to Pixley Wilderness West Road in the Price County town of Lake west of Fifield
  • Schedule: June 15 to early August
  • Cost: $5.5 million
  • Description of work: Removing a portion of the existing asphalt, repaving the roadway with new asphalt pavement, installing centerline rumble strips, replacing or repairing guardrail as needed, placing gravel along the shoulders and replacing pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: WIS 70 remains open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging.

Trempealeau County

County D
  • Location: Elk Creek Bridge northeast of the unincorporated community of Elk Creek
  • Schedule: June 10 to mid-September
  • Cost: $826,726
  • Description of work: Replacing the bridge and roadway approaches and completing shouldering and guardrail work
  • Traffic impacts: County D is closed at the bridge.
County D
  • Location: Osley Lane south of Ettrick to the Jackson County line
  • Schedule: July 13 to mid-October
  • Cost: $3.21 million
  • Description of work: Pulverizing and relaying the existing pavement and underlying base aggregate, paving 4 inches of new asphalt pavement; improving drainage by completing curb and gutter, ditching and storm sewer work; replacing culvert pipes; replacing or extending box culverts; replacing guardrail terminal ends; and placing new pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: County D is closed to through traffic.

Regionwide Pavement Marking Project

Various
  • Location: Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn
  • Schedule: April 14 to early August
  • Cost: $2.08 million
  • Description of work: Replacing pavement markings
  • Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter daytime and nighttime lane closures depending on the location of work. In the coming week, crews plan to work in the following counties:
    • Douglas County:
      • US 53, south of Kent Road/County E to US 2 East
    • Dunn County:
      • I-94 ramp and southbound WIS 25
    • St. Croix County:
      • WIS 35, Front Street to North End Road
      • WIS 35, WIS 65 North to I-94
    • Washburn County:
      • US 53 at mile marker 153
