Governor Evers approves WIS 13 safety improvement project

Work in Bayfield County adds a left-turn lane for northbound traffic at Engoe Road

Release date: August 14, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $1.05 million contract with prime contractor Northern Interstate Construction of South Range for a safety improvement project on WIS 13 at Engoe Road south of the Bayfield County city of Washburn. Construction is scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 18.

To address safety concerns related to vehicles making left turns from northbound WIS 13 to Engoe Road, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project is:

  • Widening WIS 13 to add a 12-foot left-turn lane for northbound traffic
  • Milling 2 inches of pavement in the existing lanes and east shoulder
  • Reconstructing pavement and base layers in the widened area
  • Placing new pavement markings

During construction, WIS 13 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early October.
