Location
US 51, the County K/Swamp Lake Road west of Rhinelander in the Oneida County towns of Nokomis and Cassian
Project Overview
To reduce the number and severity of crashes at this intersection, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is considering the following alternatives:
- Constructing north- and southbound left-turn lanes and a northbound right-turn lane.
- Constructing north- and southbound left-turn lanes; a northbound offset right-turn lane; and a raised median on the County K approach.
- Constructing a multilane roundabout with two-lane approaches on north- and southbound US 51 and single-lane approaches on the County K and Swamp Lake Road.
Traffic Impacts
During construction:
- US 51 is expected to remain open to traffic.
- Traffic control will depend on the alternative selected and could include flagging operations, staged construction, single-lane and shoulder closures and/or the possible closure of side roads.
- Local, business and emergency access will be maintained throughout construction.
- Temporary driveway closures might be necessary. Property owners will be notified by project staff prior to the closing of a driveway.
Real Estate
Depending on the alternative selected for construction, real estate acquisition -- both temporary and permanent -- might be necessary for making intersection improvements.
- If necessary, WisDOT expects to begin real estate acquisition in summer/fall 2025.

Public Involvement
WisDOT is holding a public involvement meeting to provide information about the proposed project and gather input from the public.
When: 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025
- A brief presentation is planned at 5 p.m. The remainder of the meeting will be open-house format.
