Built in 1971, the bridge needs maintenance to extend its service life. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:
- Replacing the bridge deck
- Completing spot painting of girder ends
- Cleaning and painting pier bearings
- Replacing abutment bearings
- Making concrete surface repairs to bridge abutments
- Replacing guardrail connected to the bridge and around the pier on US 53
- Replacing the bridge approaches
- Replacing and moving a surface drain
- Placing new pavement markings
During construction, motorists will encounter the following:
- On WIS 64:
- WIS 64 will remain open to a single lane of traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals during the deck replacement.
- Motorists will encounter daytime single-lane closures controlled by flagging on WIS 64 for remaining work.
- On US 53:
- Motorists will encounter single-lane closures on US 53 as necessary.
- Removal of the bridge deck might result in full closure of US 53 during nonpeak travel times. If the highway is closed, traffic will be detoured using the ramps at the US 53/WIS 64 interchange.
Construction currently is scheduled for 2029.
