WIS 54 between 26 Street in Wood County to County B in Portage County

Location

WisDOT is proposing to improve 26 miles (13 miles in each direction) of WIS 54 from 26th Street North in the Village of Biron in Wood County to County B in the Village of Plover in Portage County.

Overview

The existing concrete roadway pavement is showing signs of deterioration in the form of deteriorated slab and joint cracking. Railroad crossing surface and warning signal improvements will be made. The curb ramps do not meet current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Proposed Improvements

  • Concrete pavement joint repairs
  • Mill and resurface existing asphalt shoulders, turn lanes, and medians
  • Upgrade existing at-grade railroad crossings on WIS 54
  • Remove and replace existing concrete curb ramps
  • Spot location curb and gutter replacement
  • Repair existing storm sewer inlets in village of Biron and village of Plover

Real Estate

Additional right of way will be required for this project. The acquisitions anticipated are at existing curb ramp locations at WIS 54 / 42ndStreet intersection, and at-grade railroad crossings on WIS 54. Preliminary right of way impacts are shown on the exhibits. WisDOT expects to begin real estate acquisition in summer 2022.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, WIS 54 will remain open to traffic for most of the work. Motorists can expect to encounter lane shifts, and single lane closures with the use of flaggers. Work at two railroad crossings in Biron and Portage will require short term detour to complete. Department will coordinate with affected businesses during these short-term railroad work detours

Schedule

Local officials meeting: Spring 2022
Public involvement: Spring 2022
Begin real estate acquisitions: Winter 2023/spring 2024

Public Involvement

In This Together program for businesses

WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones have special needs. It's critical that customers have access to businesses and that they continue to visit them, regardless of any road work inconvenience. WisDOT's In This Together program is offered to business and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. On the In This Together page, businesses can find:

  • Specially designed Business Coordination Guide for businesses to succeed during a highway construction project, includes information on:
    • Planning ahead
    • Staying informed
    • Keeping customers informed
    • Tips for businesses
  • Case studies that demonstrate techniques that have been successfully used in communities throughout Wisconsin.
  • Promotional samples showing a variety of examples of how businesses have promoted their businesses during construction.

During construction, temporary signing for business will be available. While signing and other marketing/advertising during the construction is up to the business, WisDOT encourages businesses to use the resources above to assist them with planning for construction before the construction begins.
