WisDOT is in the process of developing plans for proposed improvements on 30.4 miles of WIS 180 in Marinette County. This website details three WIS 180 highway projects: A culvert replacement project in 2026 and two resurfacing projects with safety improvements in 2029 and 2030.
The purpose of the website is to provide information regarding the proposed improvements, describe the potential impacts it would have on the community, and offer an opportunity for public comment.
Project locations
All improvements will take place on WIS 180 between the city of Marinette and the village of Wausaukee in Marinette County, Wisconsin. Each improvement project has a unique Project ID.
- Roadway Resurfacing: WIS 180 from WIS 64 to County Road X (Project ID 9670-18-00)
- Roadway Resurfacing: WIS 180 from County Road X to US 141 (Project ID 9670-17-00)
- Culvert Replacement: WIS 180 from WIS 64 to US 141 (Project ID 9670-16-00)
- This project has concluded design and will be constructed in 2026.

Projects purpose and need
The purpose of these resurface level improvements is to extend the life of the roadway by milling the existing pavement and overlaying it with new asphalt pavement. The existing pavement structure is showing signs of distress in the form of alligator cracking and longitudinal/transverse cracking. This distress leads to undesirable ride quality, deterioration of the underlying roadway base, and increased maintenance frequency and costs. Additionally, the following safety improvements are needed.
- Project 9670-17-00 is needed to address the runoff the road crashes in the curves near Four Lakes Road and Old Highway C.
- Project 9670-18-00 is needed to update guardrail that needs replacement.
- Prior to both projects, the two Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad crossings near the south limits of project and the WIS 180 and WIS 64 intersection.
Anticipated benefits
Anticipated benefits include providing motorists with a smoother riding surface resulting in less wear on vehicles, extending the life of the pavement, and decreasing maintenance costs. Surface treatment in the curves near Four Lakes Rd and Old Hwy C and updated guardrail will improve safety for drivers. Eliminating the railroad crossings will remove the need for maintenance on both the roadway and railroad at the crossing locations.
