Location
US 53 from 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie, northwest of the US 53/WIS 29 interchange, north to County B in the town of Tilden, all in Chippewa County.
Overview
The section of US 53 includes deteriorating pavement with cracking and rutting throughout the mainline US 53 pavements as well as the interchanges with Business 29/County X, County S and County B. In addition, guardrail and some drainage features are deteriorating.
This project would:
- Replace the pavement on north- and southbound US 53, at the Business 29/County X, County S and County B interchanges and on the crossroads between ramp terminals along County S and County B.
- Complete polymer overlays on the four bridges over the Chippewa River and Bus 29/County X.
- Replace guardrail.
- Maintain culverts through cleaning, making end repairs and replacing one cross culvert.
- Repair erosion on the east side of box culvert B-9-70.
- Replace right-of-way fence.
- Install plantings for snow fence to minimize snow drifting at four locations.
- Install a high-friction surface pavement treatment near the Bus 29/County X interchange on US 53 to reduce run-off-the-road and out-of-control crashes.
- Install new pavement marking and shoulder rumble strips.
This segment of US 53 pavement was reconstructed in the early 1970s and last resurfaced in the mid-2000s. The Business 29/County X ramps and the County S interchange were resurfaced in 2018.
Schedule
Construction currently is scheduled to start in 2024.
Traffic Impacts
- US 53 will remain open to traffic during construction with bidirectional staging and temporary crossovers.
- Temporary ramp closures with detours will be required at each interchange and cross road staging versus short-term closures will be evaluated.
- Local and emergency access will be maintained to adjacent properties at the interchanges.
