Location
The project involves the bridges carrying north- and southbound US 53 over County W and railroad tracks west of Cameron in Barron County.
Overview
Built in 1973, both bridges are in need of maintenance. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:
- Removing the concrete deck overlay on the southbound US 53 structure and placing a new concrete deck overlay followed by a methacrylate flood seal
- Replacing the concrete deck on the northbound US 53 structure following by a polymer overlay
- Converting to semi-expansion joints at abutments
- Cleaning, patching and fiber wrapping girder ends
- Making concrete surface repairs on both structures
- Replacing the concrete pavement approach slabs and paving concrete approaches
- Replacing and extending guardrail
- Removing concrete surface drains (drop inlet type) at structures
- Installing concrete surface drains (flume type) at structures
The project will be constructed in conjunction with the following projects:
US 53 Southbound (US 8 to Chippewa County line) and
US 53 (County M (Main Street) Bridge).
Traffic Impacts
During construction, US 53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter long-term single-lane closures in both directions. In addition, closure of County W is anticipated at times to facilitate construction operations.
Schedule
Construction currently is scheduled for 2027.
