WIS 29 (Chippewa River Bridges), town of Wheaton - Chippewa County

Location

WIS 29 bridges over the Chippewa River west of Chippewa Falls in the Chippewa County town of Wheaton.

Overview

Built in the early 2000s, the structures are showing signs of deterioration. To address this, WisDOT is proposing to:

  • Replace the deck joints at both the east and west abutments for both east- and the westbound bridges.
  • Replace the back walls at both the east and west abutments for both structures.
  • Place a concrete overlay on the eastbound bridge deck.
  • Update guardrail at the approaches of each structure.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, WIS 29 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures and shifts. During work on the eastbound bridge:

  • The structure will be closed to traffic.
  • East- and westbound WIS 29 will be reduced to one lane.
  • Eastbound motorists will use a crossover to route traffic onto the westbound bridge, which will carry a single lane of traffic in each direction.

A similar process will occur for the construction on the westbound bridge.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the trail is expected to be impacted by construction.

Schedule

Construction currently is scheduled for 2027.
