I-41 Bridge Maintenance

Project locations:

Various bridges along the I-41 corridor - Washington County

2022 Construction

Below is an overview of construction that is currently scheduled for 2022 - but could be advanced to 2021, pending funding.

Project Overview

WisDOT will be performing preventative maintenance to five structures along I-41, between WIS 144 and the Kohlsville River, in Washington County.

Structures

  • WIS 144 over I-41
  • I-41 northbound over Kohlsville River
  • I-41 southbound over Kohlsville River
  • I-41 northbound over Tributary to East Branch Rock River (to be constructed in 2020)
  • I-41 southbound over Tributary to East Branch Rock River

The treatment proposed is a Thin Polymer Overlay - thin polymer overlays are intended to seal the road surface of the bridge and prevent salt from leeching down into the steel reinforcement. A thin polymer overlay is a thin coat of polymer spread across the deck in two coats with aggregate applied between each coat for friction. They are typically applied within ten years of initial bridge construction.

Traffic Impacts

All work will be completed during nighttime, off-peak hours. During overnight construction, one lane of traffic will remain open along I-41. Work on the WIS 144 structures over I-41 will require traffic to be detoured. During the day, the bridges will be open and traffic patterns will be as they were before construction.

2023/2024 Construction

Below is an overview of construction that is tentatively scheduled for 2023/2024 - but could be advanced to 2021, pending funding.

Project Overview

WisDOT will be rehabilitating several structures along I-41 in Washington County to extend their serviceable life. These rehabilitations will be in the form of:

  • Bridge rehabilitations (deck replacements, deck overlays and girder painting)
  • Roadway pavement and drainage improvements
  • Guardrail and guardrail end treatment improvements
  • Curb ramp improvements
  • View Overview Map

Purpose / Need

The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate several structures along I-41 to help extend their serviceable life. The pavement, drainage, guardrail and curb ramp improvements are ancillary work that tie into the bridge rehabilitation construction.

Structures

  • County Line Road/County Q over I-41
  • Maple Road over I-41
  • Lannon Road/WIS 167 eastbound over I-41
  • Mequon Road over I-41
  • Freistadt Road over I-41
  • Holy Hill Road/WIS 167 westbound over I-41
  • US 45 southbound over I-41
  • WIS 60 over I-41

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic on I-41 northbound will be reduced by two (2) lanes to a single lane in two (2) stages at each structure location between County Line Road/County Q to Holy Hill Road/WIS 167 westbound. Traffic control will not occur on consecutive bridges on I-41.
  • Traffic on I-41 southbound traffic will be reduced by two (2) lanes to a single lane in two (2) stages at each structure location between County Line Road/County Q to Holy Hill Road/WIS 167 westbound. Traffic control will not occur on consecutive bridges on I-41.
  • Traffic on I-41 northbound will be reduced to a single lane in two (2) stages at each structure located at US 45 and WIS 60.
  • Traffic on I-41 southbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane in two (2) stages at each structure located at US 45 and WIS 60.
  • Local bridge closures will occur at Maple Road, Mequon Road and Freistadt Road. Bridge closures will be staged to occur at different times through construction.
  • Traffic on eastbound County Line Road/County Q will be closed to local traffic in a single stage. Traffic on westbound County Line Road/County Q will be closed to local traffic in a separate stage.
  • I-41 entrance and exit ramp movements will altered at County Line Road/County Q and Holy Hill Road/WIS 167 locations during traffic control staging.
  • Overnight local bridge closures will occur at County Line Road/County Q and Holy Hill Road/WIS 167.
