US 53 (Old Hwy 93 to Black River), Holmen to Council Bay - La Crosse County
Project overview
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is preparing plans to improve 3.25 miles of US 53 from Old Hwy 93 to the Black River in La Crosse County. The project will address the deteriorating pavement condition, drainage issues and safety issues that have been identified at the Amsterdam Prairie Road, Sylvester Road and County T intersections. The improvements include:
- Repairing the existing concrete pavement
- Addressing high crash rates at the Amsterdam Prairie Road and Sylvester Road intersections by replacing the existing bypass lanes with dedicated left turn lanes
- Reconstruction the County T intersection into a roundabout
- Maintaining and lining culverts along the roadway to address drainage concerns and extend the useful life of the culverts
- Placing an asphalt overlay to address ride quality and provide additional pavement strength
Schedule
- March 2023 - Initial property owner notification
- December 10, 2024 - Public Involvement Meeting
- 2030 - Construction anticipated with potential advancement to 2029 if funding becomes available
Traffic impacts/detours
US 53 will remain open to traffic for the duration of construction. Motorists can expect lane closures, flagging, and temporary lane shifts during paving and intersection work.
