US 53 (WIS 157 to Holmen Drive), Onalaska to Holmen - La Crosse County
Project overview
The project includes the following elements:
- Pavement replacement on US 53 for approximately 5.15 miles from WIS 157 to the northern end of the WIS 35 interchange ramps.
- Auxiliary lanes will be added to US 53 on both roadways from WIS 17 to Sane Lake Road.
- 10 bridge structures will be improved:
- Structure widening is planned at WIS 157, Sand Lake Road, East Avenue and Riders Club Road.
- Structure rehabilitation is planned at WIS 35.
- Pavement replacement will also occur on WIS 157 between and including the interchange ramp terminals.
- Pavement replacement will occur on 15 out of 17 interchange ramps at the four interchanges.
- Drainage improvements are proposed near Sandlewood Park in Onalaska.
The improvements are needed to:
- Address concrete pavement condition on US 53, the 15 ramps and WIS 157.
- Auxiliary lanes will address traffic operations concerns due to high mainline traffic volumes.
- Eight bridge structures will be widened to accommodate traffic staging needs during construction and accommodate future corridor needs.
- Two bridge structures need deck repairs and replacement to the epoxy overlay.
- The new auxiliary lanes will add impervious surface and additional storm water runoff. The existing drainage facility near Sandlewood Park requires maintenance to accommodate additional storm water runoff and address sediment that has deposited over the past decades.

Traffic impacts/detours
US 53 will remain open to traffic. Interchange ramp closures will take place during pavement replacement. These traffic impacts are subject to change as design progresses.
